Louise Glasco

Mrs. Louise Glasco, age 77 of Cobden, died at 8:34 a.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was born December 30, 1935 in Saratoga, the daughter of Carl Fred and Ruby Mae Venson Westbrook.

Registration planned for ColorFest pageants

The eighth annual Union County ColorFest pageants are planned Friday, Oct. 11, at Jonesboro School.

All Union County girls ages 3 to 10 are welcome to sign-up. 

There will be two pageants: 5-6 year olds are in the Little Miss Pageant and 7 to 10 year olds are in the Miss Pageant. 

No pageant dresses needed, the girls will wear casual fall attire. 

Registration is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Jonesboro Fire Department.

A-J boys’ soccer off to strong start during rebuilding season

After losing a number of seniors to graduation, coach Mark Boomer considered this season to be a rebuilding year for his Anna-Jonesboro Community  High School Wildcats.  

Starting only two seniors to go with six juniors and three sophomores, his prediction certainly appeared accurate.  

But a cooperative agreement between A-J and Cobden to allow students from both schools to play for the Wildcats has added to the Cats’ team strength.  

Alto Pass to host Fall Festival

Alto Pass is making plans to host its fifth annual Fall Festival.

This year's celebration is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5, in the Union County village.

The Fall Festival is sponsored by the Alto Pride Community Group.

The festival will feature a backyard barbeque competition, a Great Downhill Derby, an apple bake-off competition, live music, a raffle, concessions and more.

Live music is planned from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at the pavilion in downtown Alto Pass. All musicians are welcome.

Wildcats face Murphysboro in home opener Friday night

The 1-0 Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team is scheduled to play its first home game of the 2013 season Friday, Sept. 6, against 0-1 Murphysboro.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be aired on WIBH radio. The game also can be heard on line by visiting www.annanews.com.

The Red Devils were defeated 43-0 by Jackson County rival Carbondale last Friday in their season opener.

A-JCHS homecoming celebration planned next week

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School Student Council is busy working on Homecoming 2013, which is scheduled next week.

This year’s theme is “'lectrocute the Lions."

Daily themes for the week are Pajama Monday, Tie-Dye Tuesday, Tiki Party Wednesday, Thursday as Class Color Day and Friday as Blue and White Day.

On Monday, homecoming festivities kick off with a snake dance and bonfire which will take place after the sophomore football game.  

On Friday, the homecoming parade is scheduled to step off from the Anna City Park at 1 p.m.  

Four Corrections employees honored for life-saving action

Correctional Officers Tim Bowen, Robert Boyd and Chris Whitaker and Correctional Food Supervisor Doug Halterman have been honored as August employees of the month at the Shawnee Correctional Center/Hardin County Work Camp.

In announcing the recognition, warden Allan Martin reported that on May 13 at approximately 3:15 p.m., the four employees were leaving work and came upon a single-car accident on Illinois Route 146.

A vehicle had run into a ditch and flipped over. The driver was pinned inside the vehicle.
