Burrell E. “Duke” Little Jr.

         Mr. Burrell E. “Duke” Little Jr., age 75 of Anna, beloved husband, father and brother, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday, September 29, 2013 at his home in Anna. He was born March 12, 1938 in Cairo, the son of Burrell E. Sr and Marie Ulrich Little. He married his best friend and life partner, Rachel Crews on June 19, 1965 in Anna.

Terry Lee Davis

Mr. Terry Lee Davis, age 48, of St. Louis, formerly of Elco, died at 11:49 p.m. Sunday, September 15, 2013 in the DePaul Health Center in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born April 17, 1965 in Elgin, the son of Milford and Wilma Lingle Davis.

         Terry is survived by his mother, Wilma Davis of Elco; three sisters, Beth (John) Bryant of Creal Springs, Angela (Eddie) Summers of Elco, and Susan (Wesley) McCammon of Owasso, OK; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father.

‘Arte Michoacana' exhibit on display in downtown Cobden

anthill gallery & vintage curiosities in downtown Cobden is joining in the celebration of National Latino Heritage Month with a new exhibition of art. 

“Arte Michoacana from Cobden” features art by Juana Duran, Lilia Duran, Catalina Charicata and Elizabeth Duran.

The exhibition opened Friday, Sept. 13. Sand painting, photography and traditional Mexican embroidery/crochet are featured.

“Arte Michoacana from Cobden” is scheduled to be on display at anthill gallery at 102 N. Front St. through Oct. 27.

Anna angler Lauren Holshouser qualifies for Ladies Bass Classic

Lauren Holshouser of Anna is reaping the rewards of her bass fishing expertise.

The 18-year-old Shawnee Community College sophomore has qualified for the Ladies Bass Anglers’  Association Classic which is scheduled at Lake Ray Hubbard near Dallas, Texas, Oct. 16-18.

“This was my dream to make the Classic,” said the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School graduate. “I started bass fishing in high school. I’m really excited about this.”

A-J volleyball defeats Herrin

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School volleyball team topped visiting Herrin 25-13, 25-18 Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Kendall Carter led the way for the Lady Wildcats with 15 digs, 12 serve receives, 6 good serves and an ace.

Katie Edwards added 10 digs, 8 serve receives and kills, 5 good serves and a block.

Mikayla Dammerman had 15 assists, 5 good serves, a kill and an ace.

Madison Housman had 14 good serves, an ace and a block.

Brenda Olandez had 12 digs and 6 serve receives. Jamie Hammond had 4 kills and a block.

Audrey L. Dusch

Mrs. Audrey L. Dusch, age 86 of Carbondale, formerly of Makanda, died at 4:40 p.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013 in the Helia Healthcare Center in Carbondale. She was born March 16, 1928 in Alto Pass, the daughter of Henry and Mattie Grammer Bryant.         

         Audrey is survived by her son, Anthony Dusch; one son in law, Francis Duty of Cobden; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.R. Dusch; and daughter, Tonya Duty.

3-0 Wildcats travel to Nashville Friday night

The 3-0 Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team is slated to be on the road Friday night, Sept. 20, for a matchup with 1-2 Nashville.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be aired on WIBH radio. The game also can be heard on line by visiting www.annanews.com.

The Nashville High School football team got on the winning track last week with a 50-23 victory over visiting West Frankfort.

County commissioners continue review of tourism fund

A review of the allocation of Union County tourism funds continues.

The issue was on the agenda at last week's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was Friday morning, Sept. 13, at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

The tourism fund has been on the agenda at several recent county board meetings.

Discussion is focusing on how to best utilize a tourism fund budget in the most efficient, and most fair, way possible.

Prescribed burning set at state forest

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, IDNR, reports that prescribed fire will be utilized this fall, during October and November, in portions of the Trail of Tears State Forest in Union County to promote a healthy forest habitat.  

Short-term closures of one to two days may occur within the North Forest Road area of the site.

The areas which will be affected by the closures are adjacent to fire trails 30 to 39.

A-J girls’ golf competes in two matches

Chelsea Reinier shot a 54 to lead Anna-Jonesboro’s efforts in the McDonald’s Invitational high school girls’ golf tournament played at the Union County Country Club golf course in Anna Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Tanner Stadelbacher shot 57, Sydney Ray 63 and Kriston Roberts and Mehgan Smith each shot 64. Sierra Miller shot 77.

Cobden’s Kaitlin McWhorter and Savannah Eck competed as individuals. McWhorter shot 52 and Eck shot 60.

The Lady Wildcats finished with a team score of 238. Massac County won the 10-team tournament with a team score of 156.
