Special archery deer hunt set at state fish, wildlife area

A three-day special archery deer hunt is planned Nov. 1-3 on the 3,000-acre refuge portion of the Union County State Fish & Wildlife Area near Ware.

Residents and nonresidents are welcome to apply for the hunt, with up to four in a group.

Questions about applying for one of the 50 positions which are available can be directed to the fish and wildlife area office by calling 833-5175 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays.

PAST celebrates opening of new Lincoln Museum Room

The PAST organization of Union County celebrated a special occasion last Sunday afternoon at its new home.

PAST works to preserve and promote landmark structures in Union County.

One of those historic structures now serves as PAST's home – Heritage House, which is located at 201 S. Main St. in Jonesboro.

Sunday afternoon, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to commemorate the opening of a new Lincoln Museum Room at the Heritage House.

A-J soccer defeats Marion

Noah Fuller and Jesus Godinez each scored a goal to lead Anna-Jonesboro to a 2-0 win over visiting Marion in high school boys’ soccer Thursday, Sept. 19.

Fuller scored the Wildcats first goal following a pass from Zac Parr. Godinez later scored off of a deflection by Ryan Stark.

Steve Wells played 80 minutes in goal and had 9 saves. This was fifth time this season that Wells held opponents scoreless.

A-J improved to 8-1 and was scheduled to play at Sikeston, Mo., earlier this week. A-J is scheduled to play at Saxony Lutheran on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

A-J girls’ golf competes in two matches

Chelsea Reinier shot a 54 to lead Anna-Jonesboro’s efforts in the McDonald’s Invitational high school girls’ golf tournament played at the Union County Country Club golf course in Anna Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Tanner Stadelbacher shot 57, Sydney Ray 63 and Kriston Roberts and Mehgan Smith each shot 64. Sierra Miller shot 77.

Cobden’s Kaitlin McWhorter and Savannah Eck competed as individuals. McWhorter shot 52 and Eck shot 60.

The Lady Wildcats finished with a team score of 238. Massac County won the 10-team tournament with a team score of 156.

Keith Ellis

Mr. Keith Ellis, age 62 of Cobden, died at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at his home in Cobden. He was born November 20, 1950 in Murphysboro, the son of Merle Dean and Ruth Aleen Brothers Ellis.

Kemp, Reed power A-J to win

The one-two punch of quarterback Jay Kemp and running back Damian Reed propelled Anna-Jonesboro to a 36-12 win over visiting Massac County in high school football action Friday night, Sept. 13.

“Both of those kids had great games and it was kind of what we expected of them,” A-J football coach Brett Detering said. “To be successful, you have to do more than one thing.”

Kemp was 11 of 18 passing for 144 yards. He had one touchdown pass and also rushed for two touchdowns. Reed rushed for 202 yards on 17 carries and scored twice.

A-J to host special game Friday night

A sea of white is expected at The Pit this Friday night when the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats host Massac County in Southern Illinois football action.

The Wildcats will be sponsoring their first White Out for MDA football game.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., which is A-J's home field.

MDA is the acronym for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Through the implementation of a new Be a Man of Character, BMOC, program which involves the Wildcat football team, A-J players and coaches have become closely association with the MDA.

Shawnee volleyball third at Century tournament

A Shawnee High School junior varsity volleyball team is competing this fall at both the JV and varsity levels.

Stephanie Lingle is head coach of the volleyball team at the Wolf Lake school.

Lingle said that her squad has seven freshmen, one sophomore and one junior.

Shawnee recently played in a varsity volleyball tournament which was hosted by Century High School at Ullin.

Shawnee posted a 2-2 record in tournament play and earned third-place honors.

Lingle shared an updatefrom the Century tournament action.
