Bailey announces he will seek reelection as county treasurer

Union County's treasurer this week formally announced that he is seeking reelection.

Darren Bailey said in a news release issued Tuesday, Sept. 10, that he "is excited to announce that he will be seeking a second term as Union County treasurer.

“I am so pleased with the direction Union County is going, and especially that of the treasurer’s office. Over the past three years we have become more efficient and responsive to the needs of the people of Union County,” he said.

Cobden baseball gains split

The Cobden High School baseball team split in a pair of games played at Bloomfield, Mo., Saturday, Sept. 14.

Cobden 4, Bloomfield 2: Sam Cohen was 3-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBIs to lead Cobden to the win in their first game of the day.

J.T. Moore was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for the Appleknockers. Zach Moore was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Logan Spalt was 1-for-2.

Tyler Lewey was 1-for-3 with 2 stolen bases. Jacob Furlow was 1-for-3. Dylan Duty and Parker Flamm each had a stolen base.

Hines featured on reality show

A lifelong Anna-Jonesboro resident is set to be featured on a new reality weight loss show called "My Big Fat Revenge" on the Oxygen Channel.  

Hillary Hines will be featured in an episode of "My Big Fat Revenge" on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. on the Oxygen Channel.  

Her episode will also be available for viewing the following day online at www.oxygen.com.   

Anna man sentenced on meth charge

Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Sept. 16 that Danny J. Cook, 49, of 120 Casey St. in Anna has been sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to one count of unlawful participation in methamphetamine production, which is a Class 1 felony.

Cook, along with two other individuals, was arrested July 9 at his residence following an investigation by the Union County Sheriff's Office.

Performing, visual arts showcased during ColorFest

Unity Through the Arts is showcasing Union County’s many performing and visual artists in a publication that will be distributed during ColorFest weekend in October.

A map showing the locations of galleries, art centers, studios and businesses that feature local art will be available both in print and online to the area’s visitors and residents.

Local actor keeping busy schedule

A Union County resident will be keeping a busy schedule on the stage and on the set of a film production.

Longtime theatrical performer R.L. Pete Housman has a role in the upcoming production of "8" at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Housman also has earned a role in the production of the film "Gone Girl." Filming for the 20th Century Fox production has started in Cape Girardeau, the Southeast Missourian newspaper reported.

Student-Parent Information Night set Monday, Sept. 30

Anna-Jonesboro National Bank is planning to present its annual Student-Parent Information Night.

The popular event is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

The program is open to parents and students from all Union County high schools.

Information will be provided about scholarships, financial aid and further education and career opportunities.

High school counselors and representatives of colleges, universities, the armed forces and local organizations will participate.

A-J homecoming celebration underway

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School's 2013 homecoming celebration is underway this week.

Festivities were scheduled to start Monday night. The celebration continues through this Saturday night.

Thursday, today, is Class Color Day at A-J. Friday is Blue and White Day. Blue and white are the school colors.

A homecoming parade is set for 1 p.m. Friday.

The parade is scheduled to start at the west end of the Anna City Park in Anna. The starting point is by the Anna Pool.

Marcia B. Tellor

Mrs. Marcia B. Tellor age 82 of Anna, died at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2013 in the Herrin Hospital in Herrin. She was born July 2, 1931 in Anna, the daughter of Samuel S. and Glenna M. Wilson Fox. She married Byrle D. Boyd on August 8, 1950 in Jonesboro. He preceded her in death on October 1, 1971. Marcia later married David Tellor on October 12, 1974 in Cobden.
