Fall Festival planned in Alto Pass this weekend

The fifth annual Fall Festival is planned Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5, in Alto Pass.

The Fall Festival is sponsored by the Alto Pride Community Group.

The festival will feature a backyard barbeque competition, a Great Downhill Derby, an apple bake-off competition, live music, a raffle, concessions and more.

Live music is planned from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at the pavilion in downtown Alto Pass. All musicians are welcome.

The apple bake-off competition is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

Anna Council, county review dispatch services

The Anna City Council and Union County government representatives are engaged in talks which focus on dispatch services.

The issue was on the agenda at last week's regular meeting of the Anna City Council.

The meeting was Tuesday evening, Oct. 15, at Anna City Hall.

The city council welcomed Union County Sheriff David Livesay, Union County Sheriff's Office chief deputy Scott Harvel and county administrator Kelly Carter to the meeting.

Susanne M. Stell

Mrs. Susanne M. Stell, age 60 of Anna, died at 9:45 a.m. Monday, October 28, 2013 at her home in Anna.

         Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.

June K. Bowen

Mrs. June K. Bowen, age 90 of Jonesboro, died at 9:20 pm, Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at her home in Jonesboro.  She was born on February 17, 1923 in Union County, the daughter of Elvis L. and Maude (Kelley) Knupp.  June married Raymond Bowen on September 7, 1946 in Jonesboro.  He preceded her in death on April 29, 1994.

Addie Mae Scott

Mrs. Addie Mae Scott, age 71 of Cobden, died at 8:40 pm, Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at her home in Cobden.  She was born on June 28, 1942 outside of Cleveland, Tennessee, the daughter of Jesse Dewey Lyle Sr. and Leaola (Haggard) Brokaw. In 1945 Addie’s father Jesse was killed in a tragic tractor accident.  In 1946 Leaola then married Donald Brokaw of Glen Elder, Kansas.

 Addie married Gerald Leroy Scott on August 7, 1960 at the Glenview Friends Church in Glenelder, Kansas.

A-J earns 14th straight playoff berth

Anna-Jonesboro’s defense never allowed the Du Quoin offense to get on track as the host Wildcats rolled to a 36-15 win over the Indians in high school football action Friday night, Oct. 11.

The win propelled the 6-1 Wildcats to their 14th consecutive playoff berth and knocked the 2-5 Indians out of the postseason.

Du Quoin’s offense was limited to 52 yards rushing and 77 yards passing.

Performances of World War II play 'Canteen' continue Friday, Sunday

6-1 Wildcats set to face 1-6 Sparta

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team’s pass defense should get a test when the Wildcats travel to Sparta this Friday night to play the Bulldogs.

“They’ve got kids who can make the big play and that’s always a concern,” A-J football coach Brett Detering said. “Their quarterback has thrown for over 1,000 yards – we’ll have to be able to defend against him.”

Game  time is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna. The game can also be heard on line at www.annanews.com.

Current version of GED will be replaced in 2014

With the current version of the GED test set to expire soon, the regional office of education at Ullin is planning to offer additional testing dates.

The current version is known as the 2002 Series GED test.

This version is scheduled to be replaced with the new 2014 GED test on Jan. 2, 2014.

The regional office notes that persons who have taken the 2002 Series GED test, but have not passed all five parts, will have until the end of 2013 to pass them.

A-J golf coach shares thoughts on 2013 season

The 2013 season has come to an end for the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams.

Cory Miller, the coach of the golf squads, reflected on the season and shared his thoughts on a “great job” which was done by members of the teams in the following article:

Why did these young men and women decide to come out for the A-J golf team?

It is a personal test, pitting you against your environment. In golf the player is always competing against himself or herself. It is a personal experience and an ongoing challenge to improve.
