Mosquito sample tests positive for West Nile

The Southern Seven Health Department reports that on Sept. 10, a mosquito sample from Union County returned positive for the West Nile virus.

Southern Seven environmental health director Brad Rendleman reported in a news release that the positive results "means that one of the mosquitoes tested was carrying West Nile virus."

"However, a mosquito may fly up to 15 miles in search of a blood meal and the exact area where the mosquito contracted the virus cannot be determined," Rendleman said.

Harvel formally announces candidacy for county sheriff

Current Chief Deputy Scott Harvel with the Union County Sheriff's Office announced this week that he will run for Union County sheriff in the March 2014 primary election as a Democratic candidate.

Harvel began his career at the Union County Sheriff's Office as a jailer/dispatcher in 1987.

Over the course of 26 years, Harvel has worked his way through the ranks of the sheriff's office to his current position as chief deputy.

Colleen Corzine Garrott

Colleen Corzine Garrott, 96, of Anna, died at 3 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at Union County Nursing Home in Anna.

Born Thelma Colleen Corzine on Oct. 8, 1916, she was one of six children of James Earl and Sarah Elnora Howell Corzine. She was born and raised in the Balcom community. She attended Balcom School and graduated from Anna-Jonesboro Community High School in 1934.

Shelby Jean Peshoff

       Mrs. Shelby Jean Peshoff, age 43 of Anna, died at 8:48 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2013 in the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. She was born October 16, 1969 in Anna, the daughter of Lowell Eastwood and Faye Davis Rendleman.

Trail of Tears Lodge, Resort to celebrate 25th anniversary

The Trail of Tears Lodge & Resort is planning to have a 25th anniversary celebration Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29.

The celebration will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Trail of Tears is located at 1575 Fair City Rd. near Reynoldsville in southwest Union County.

The lodge plans to debut its new Signature Wines. Activities will include a presentation by Trail of Tears Lodge & Resort winemaker Matt Mollett and free wine tasting.

Homemade fudge samples from Trail of Tears’ own Sweets & Treats Fudge Factory are planned.

JAKES event set Saturday

A Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship, JAKES, event is planned Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Trail of Tears State Forest near Jonesboro.

The free event is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the ball diamond area at the state forest.

JAKES is sponsored by the Trail of Tears Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Organizers note that JAKES is designed to provide young people (those 17 and under) with an opportunity to learn more about the outdoors.

Anna Council revisits disposal of yard waste

With the imminent arrival of autumn, Anna city officials are continuing to look at a way to dispose of yard waste and tree limbs.

The issue was revisited at last week's regular meeting of the Anna City Council. The meeting was Tuesday evening, Sept. 17, at Anna City Hall.

The city recently discontinued the pick up of yard waste. The move was taken after action taken by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency which prohibits the city from burning yard waste at the site of its now-closed municipal landfill north of Anna.

A-J/Cobden 5, Mt. Vernon 0

Noah  Fuller scored three goals and Zac Parr added two to lead the Anna-Jonesboro-Cobden co-op team to a 5-0 win over visiting Mt. Vernon in high school boys’ soccer Monday, Sept. 16.

Parr, Marcus Taylor and Ryan Stark each had one assist.

Steve Wells played 80 minutes in goal and had a save.

A-J improved to 7-1 and is scheduled to play Thursday, today, at home against Marion.


        Car show, Oktoberfest planned Oct. 5 in Cobden

        Cobden will be a busy place Saturday, Oct. 5: a car show, an Oktoberfest event and a community-wide yard sale are planned.

        The car show and Oktoberfest will be held in the park in downtown Cobden. Proceeds from the events will go to charitable and community projects.

        Southern Counties Autos Unlimited plans to sponsor a nonjudged car show.

        The car show is scheduled to begin at noon and will continue into the evening. Food, music, games, a poker run, a charity fundraiser and other activities are planned.
