Alva Dillow

Alva Dillow, 102, of Dongola, died at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at her residence.

She was born on April 6, 1911, in Dongola, the daughter of Turner Leo Miller and Donia Heilig Miller.

She married Lewis Everett Dillow on Sept. 17, 1932.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Dongola.

Homer F. Hayes

Mr. Homer F. Hayes, age 70 of Anna, died at 12:10 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at his home in Anna. He was born February 18, 1943.

         Homer is survived all his family and friends at Independent Living Services.

World War II exhibit at arts center

PAST and the Anna Arts Center invite the public to a free exhibition of World War II photographs and stories.

The exhibit is on display at the Anna Arts Center performance theatre at 117 W. Davie St. in Anna.

An extensive display of photographs with descriptions, news clippings, uniforms, medals, pins, ribbons, rationing cards, newspapers, magazines, sheet music and other historical items are on display.

The items which are displayed tell the stories of World War II service men and women. 

A-J girls’ golf competes at regional

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School girls’ golf team competed at the IHSA Class 1A Carterville regional at the Crab Orchard Golf Club Wednesday, Oct. 9.

The Lady Wildcats finished 10th with a team score of 498. Massac County was first with 333.

Tanner Stadelbacher shot a 114 to lead the Lady Wildcats. Chelsea Reinier shot 125 for A-J, Meghan Smith 128 and Kriston Roberts 131. Sierra Miller shot 138 and Sydney Ray 152.

Eldorado’s Taylor Goodley was the individual medalist with a score of 70.

Poll shows support for reform in Illinois

Southern Illinois voters, including those in Union County, overwhelmingly support a variety of reform measures they think may improve state government and politics, according to a new poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

From term limits and open primaries to campaign contribution limits and redistricting, the poll showed there is broad support for changes to Illinois’ political processes.

On Lincoln's mind after Vicksburg

With Nov. 19 marking the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield is highlighting one letter to, or by, Lincoln, written between the end of Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, and his famous speech. Each letter represents one of the many issues Lincoln had to face as chief executive of the nation during its greatest crisis.

Union County tax bills mailed

Union County property tax bills have been mailed. Two due dates have been set for payment of the bills.

Nearly 12,000 of the bills were mailed Sept. 13 by the Union County treasurer's office.

Due dates for payment of the bills are Oct. 18 and Nov. 18. Bills can be paid at local financial institutions and at the treasurer's office at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

The treasurer's office also has mailed around 1,200 mobile home tax bills. The due date for those bills is Nov. 18.

Lincoln Museum Room grand opening planned

The public is invited to commemorate the 155th anniversary of the historic Lincoln-Douglas debate in Jonesboro this weekend.

The PAST organization of Union County is planning to host a grand opening of the Lincoln Museum Room Sunday afternoon.

The new Lincoln heritage site is located in PAST's new Heritage House at 201 S. Main St. in Jonesboro.

The grand opening will be celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony which is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15.

A-J boys’ golf competes in two matches

Curtis Plott shot a 43 to lead Anna-Jonesboro’s efforts in a four-team high school boys’ golf match at the Jackson County Country Club course near Murphysboro Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Brock Goforth was next for A-J with 46, followed by Joseph Tingley 47 and David Prater 49 to round out the team scoring. Aidan Frick shot 54 and Tyler Taylor 59.

A-J finished fourth with a team score of 185. Herrin won with 153. Murphysboro finished second with 159 and Pinckneyville was third with 166.

Wildcats overpower Hornets on way to 55-14 road victory

Nashville scored a touchdown on its opening drive to take what proved to be a short-lived lead against visiting Anna-Jonesboro in high school football action Friday night, Sept. 20.

After Nashville scored, A-J responded with 35 straight points on its way to a 55-14 victory over the Hornets.

“It wasn’t a good start for us,” A-J football coach Brett Detering said. “They were running those power plays on us. Once our defense had a chance to see it, they were able to get some stops.”
