Dongola junior high team wins regional

Mackenzie Prout was 3-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBIs to lead Dongola to a 9-7 win over Century in the Class S junior high school softball regional at New Simpson Hill Friday, Sept. 21.

Zaydah Granier was 2-for-3 for Dongola. Megan Micheal was 1-for-3. Kerah Cooley was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

Delaney Cummins and Karley Eddleman were each 1-for-4 and Logan Wood added an RBI.

Micheal was the winning pitcher with 6 strikeouts and a walk.

Herrin tops A-J 37-28

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team closed out its regular season with a 37-28 loss to host Herrin in a non-conference game Friday night, Oct. 19.

“We played better than we did the week before, but we’re not doing what we did earlier in the season,” said A-J football coach, Brett Detering.

“We’re not tackling well. For some reason, we’re not making the tackles we made earlier. We have to make the necessary adjustments.”

The Wildcats end the regular season with a 6-3 record. The Tigers  improved to 5-4.

Anna residents face multiple meth charges

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Tuesday that two local residents face multiple methamphetamine-related charges.

Edmonds reported that Jason B. Stanton, 42, and Brandy L. Stanton, 35, both of 35 Wright Ln. in rural Anna had been charged with:

One count of participation in methamphetamine production, a Class X felony.

One count of possession of methamphetamine, a Class X felony.

One count of possession of methamphetamine manufacturing waste, a Class 2 felony.

Orin L. Kelley

Orin L. Kelley 89 of Anna, formerly of Jonesboro died at 9:40 AM Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the Union County Hospital in Anna.

He was born on August 14, 1923 in Union County the son of Francis Lester and Clydie (Lingle) Kelley.  He married Dorothy Boyd on December 25, 1946.  She preceded him in death on May 6, 2002.

SIUC honors employees for years of service

Southern Illinois University Carbondale has honored 336 employees for their service to the university with a program and reception.

The event was Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the SIUC Student Center.  

SIUC chancellor Rita Cheng and her husband, Tom Cheng hosted the event.

The event honored employees who have 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 45 and 50 years of service to SIUC.  

The 336 employees have a combined total of 5,720 years of service to the University.

ColorFest Pageants

The seventh annual Union County ColorFest Pageants are planned at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12. The pageants will take place in the gymnasium at Jonesboro School.

Union County girls ages 3-10 were invited to be a part of the pageants. Two pageants are planned: 5-6-year-olds are in the Little Miss Pageant and 7-10-year-olds are in the Miss Pageant.  

Each participant will receive a trophy. The overall winners will receive a prize, trophies and a crown. The contestants are judged on stage presence, beauty, personality/question and answer and fall attire.  

PAST board works on plans for local tours, carols event

The September meeting of the board for the PAST organization of Union County was a busy one as chairpersons reported about final details of upcoming projects.

Barbara Bauer, Susan Whitemountain and Lee Hackney showed proofs of the ColorFest walking tour books featuring West Railroad Street (now West Vienna Street) in Anna. 

The completed books are for sale at Country Cupboard and in the display case at This ‘N That on S. Main St. in Anna.

ColorFest: Trinity Lutheran Church

Trinity Lutheran Church in Anna plans to present its annual German Marktplatz meal Saturday, Oct. 13, during Union County’s ColorFest activities.

The German meal will be a luncheon this year.

The luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church’s fellowship hall at 205 W. Jefferson St. in Anna.

The menu will feature bratwurst sausages, sauerkraut, hot potato salad, kettle beef and noodles, cucumber salad, applesauce, pretzels and cooked cheese.

Beverages will be served in a root beer garden.

Critter Night scheduled

An annual Critter Night is planned Friday, Oct. 19, at the Lincoln Memorial Picnic Grounds in Jonesboro.

Critter Night will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service/Shawnee National Forest in partnership with Unimin Specialties Minerals Inc.

Those who attend Critter Night will have an opportunity to learn about the noctural animals of Illinois, including bats, coyotes, raccoons and opossums through crafts, activities and games.

Anna pool's future discussed

Plans for possible major improvements at the city pool in Anna are under review.

The proposal was on the agenda at this week's regular meeting of the Anna City Council.

The meeting was Tuesday evening at Anna City Hall.

The condition of the city pool has been a topic of discussion at a number of council meetings during 2012.

The pool is located at the Anna City Park. A pool for young children is located near the main pool.
