ColorFest: Jonesboro

ColorFest activities are planned Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13, in Jonesboro.

The activities will take place in front of the Jonesboro fire station. The fire station is located on West Market Street.

The schedule of events follows:

Food and craft vendors: Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

(Food vendors will include the Jonesboro Fire Department, the Jonesboro Public Library and others.)

Music is planned on Friday and Saturday nights.

ColorFest Biathlon

Athletes from throughout the region will be participating in the annual Union County ColorFest biathlon.

The biathlon is planned Saturday, Oct. 13.

The biathlon begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna.

The biathlon features a 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) run and a 29.2-kilometer (17.5 miles) bike ride.

Sign-in is scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday at Goodner Hall on the grounds of the Choate Center.

Union County man faces multiple charges

A Union County man faces multiple charges in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a child.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Monday that Benson T. Poirier, 33, of 1870 Old Highway 51 North in rural Anna faces seven charges.

Poirier has been charged with four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, all Class X felonies, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, all Class 2 felonies.

Columbia edges A-J at regional

Enrique Arreola and Garrett Nadeau each scored an unassisted goal to lead Anna-Jonesboro Community High School’s soccer team’s efforts in a 3-2 loss to host Columbia in the first round of the high school boys’ Class 1A Waterloo Gibault regional Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Arreoloa and Noah Fuller each had 4 shots on goal and Nadeau had 3. Marcus Taylor and Ben Godinez each had a shot on goal.

A-J goalkeeper Steven Wells had 8 saves in 80 minutes.

Massac County lost 7-0 to Waterloo Gibault in another first-round game.

Car show, yard sales set in Cobden

The Village of Cobden is expected to be a busy place Saturday, Oct. 6.

A car show, a community yard sale day, special hours at a local museum and a book signing are planned Saturday.

Fall Fest Car Show

A Fall Fest Car Show is planned Saturday, Oct. 6, in the park in downtown Cobden.

Southern Counties Autos Unlimited plans to sponsor a nonjudged car show featuring a variety of models of vehicles.

The event is scheduled to begin at noon and will continue into the evening.

A-JCHS class of 1962 has 50th reunion Oct. 5-7

The A-J class of 1962 celebrated their 50th reunion on Oct. 5-7.

A few of them braved the cold rainy football game at the Pit and then gathered for a social hour at the Blue Boar.

It was a fun evening trying to figure out classmates they hadn’t been around in years.

On Saturday afternoon the class of 1962 had lunch at the beautiful Blue Sky Vineyard on Rocky Comfort Road and sampled some of their award winning wines.

ColorFest: PAST revives Railroad Street

Two years ago, the PAST organization of Union County prepared a 2010 walking tour guide and promoted an historical visit to the “library neighborhood” with recollections of 1900s Anna.

Last year, the subject of the 2011 walking tour guide was North Main Street with a 150th anniversary look at Civil War Anna.

In 2012, the spotlight will be on “Railroad Street," with attention devoted to life along the north side of the railroad in the vicinity of the old stations and depots between Main and Green streets in Anna on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Economic growth focus of discussion by Anna City Council

Economic growth, as reflected in the number of building permits which have been issued, was highlighted at last week's regular meeting of the Anna City Council.

The meeting was Tuesday evening, Oct. 16, at Anna City Hall.

The City of Anna issues building permits for residential and commercial projects.

City administrator Steve Guined presented statistics showing that 22 residential building permits had been issued for the period from January 2011 through the time of last week's meeting. The permits had a value of $434,823.

A-J faces top seeded Greenville in first playoff round Saturday

The Anna-Jonesboro  Community High School football team will face a big challenge Saturday when it travels to Greenville to play the Comets in the first round of the Illinois High School Association 2012 Class 3A playoffs.

"They've scored a ton of points this season," A-J football coach Brett Detering said. "They average 41 points a game."

The game will kick off at 1:30 p.m. and will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna. The game also can be heard online by visiting www.annanews.com.
