Union County now on Facebook, Twitter

As a part of ongoing efforts to increase transparency and responsiveness, Union County government is now on Facebook and Twitter.  

The public can find Union County at twitter.com/unioncountyil or unioncountyil.gov/facebook and follow or like us, respectively, to receive the latest updates from the county.  

The move to the social media platforms was announced in an Oct. 2 news release from the Union County Board of Commissioners.

ColorFest: Chili cookoff

The Downtown Anna organization is planning to sponsor a chili cookoff Saturday, Oct. 13.

The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Anna.

The cookoff will be taking place during the 2012 Union County ColorFest celebration.

Trophies will be awarded to chili cookoff winners for first, second and third place. Trophies will be donated by Down Home Do-Dads.

Votes to select the winners will be cast by those who visit downtown Anna and taste chilis entered in the competition.

Conner leads A-J girls’ golf team in regional play

Allison Conner shot a 105 to lead the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School girls’ golf team to a sixth place finish Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Class 1A regional golf tournament played at the Union County Country Club in Anna.

The Lady Wildcats finished with a team score of 448 in the 12-team regional.

Kenzie Dillow shot a 111, followed by Katie Malnar at 112 and Amanda Halter with a 120.

Sydney Ray shot 150 and Sierra Miller 154.

Massac County finished first with a team score of 350.

Charles Robert Park Sr.

<strong>Charles Robert Park Sr., age 66, of Cape Girardeau, died at 6:25 AM, Friday, October 19, 2012 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.</strong>

<strong>He was born on December 16, 1945 in Cape Girardeau, MO to James Edward and Ruth Ann Kennedy Park.</strong>

 

ColorFest: Stinson Library events

The Friends of Stinson Library are planning ColorFest activities, beginning with a book sale from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12.

The book sale will be in the lower auditorium at Stinson Memorial Library in Anna.

Activities also are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.  

Events will include a flea market, a book sale, crafts, jewelry, food and music. Up to 60 vendors are expected to participate.

The group Banjovi is scheduled to perform Saturday, Oct. 13.

ColorFest 2012

Union County's 2012 ColorFest celebration took place last weekend. Activities could be found from the top of Bald Knob Mountain near Alto Pass to the hearts of Anna, Cobden, Dongola and Jonesboro.

If you liked music, ColorFest was the place to be. There was music at the Cross of Peace on Bald Knob Mountain. There was music in downtown Cobden. There was music in downtown Anna and at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School. There was music in Jonesboro. There was music everywhere, and we're guessing that some folks were even dancing in the streets.

Vienna resident sentenced for sexual assault

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds on Tuesday reported that a Johnson County resident had been sentenced on a charge of criminal sexual assault.

Edmonds identified the suspect as Leslie K. Smith, 58, of 2285 Old Metropolis Rd. in Vienna.

Criminal sexual assault is a Class 1 felony.

Smith was charged with committing a sexual act with a household member between the ages of 13 and 17 between the years 2004 and 2005.

Smith was arrested following an investigation by the Anna Police Department and Illinois State Police.

Union County plat book available

The new, 2013 edition of the Union County plat book is available.

Copies of the book can be purchased at the Union County Farm Bureau office in Jonesboro.

The office is located at 104 W. Broad St.

A new feature in the plat book is the addition of aerial photography to match traditional landownership maps.

The book also features a landowner index for easy cross referencing, rural city maps and road maps.

James Brown

James Brown, 80, of Anna, died at 1:09PM on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the home of his daughter.

He was born on February 4, 1932 in Cypress the son of Henry Gideon and Bertha Jane (Fain) Brown. He married Doris Jean Cox on February 20, 1952.  She preceded him in death on October 21, 2009.

He served his country honorably in the United States Army.  He was a member of the American Legion and the First Christian Church of Anna. He retired from the United States Penitentiary at Marion.

Attempted murder charge filed

A Mound City man faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, following an alleged incident which happened early Sunday morning in Anna.

Anna Police Chief Dale Foster reported that the incident happened at a residence on Chestnut Street in Anna.

The suspect is alleged to have used a razor blade knife to cut the stomach of his girlfriend, a 25-year-old woman from Goreville.

The victim was transported by the Union County Ambulance Service to Union County Hospital in Anna for treatment of her injuries.
