Carterville top volleyball regional seed

Carterville is the top- seed in the Class 1A regional high school volleyball tournament which is scheduled to be hosted by Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

The regional will be played Oct. 22-25.

The Lady Wildcats are seeded second, followed by Johnston City, Trico, Vienna and Chester.

A-J, 14-12, is scheduled to play the Johnston City-Trico winner at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23.

The championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25

Health fair location changed

Union County Hospital in Anna is planning to host its 12th annual health fair Friday, Oct. 5.

Due to the threat of bad weather on Friday, the location of the health fair has been moved from the hospital to the lower gymnasium at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

Hours for the event are still scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Lab draws still are planned from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the main lobby at Union County Hospital.

ColorFest: Cobden

A ColorFest Festival is planned Saturday, Oct. 13, in Cobden.

The festival will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The Old Feed Store in downtown Cobden.

Activities are scheduled to include:

Arts and crafts vendors.

Local musicians.

Children’s activities, including face painting, pumpkin painting and hayrides.

Fresh pressed cider.

Brats and hot dogs.


        Margaret “Mac” Johnson

        Margaret “Mac” Johnson, 95, of Metropolis and formerly of Ullin, died at 4:45AM on Friday, October 12, 2012 at Metropolis Nursing and Rehab.

        She was born Dec. 28, 1916 at Ullin, IL, the daughter of Richard and Sophia Stodacher Echols.  She graduated from Ullin High School in 1931 and was married on Dec. 23, 1936 to Gordon “Porky” Johnson.  To this union 4 children were born.  Mac and Porky spent most of their lives together raising their family and operating Porky’s Restaurant in Ullin.

        She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Metropolis.

        2012 Illinois youth firearm deer hunt slated

        The 2012 Illinois youth firearm deer hunt is scheduled Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7.

        The hunt is for young people with a valid youth deer permit who have not reached their 16th birthday by the first day of the hunt.  

        Youth deer permits are available over-the-counter at Illinois Department of Natural Resources, IDNR, license vendors throughout the state.  

        Hunters can purchase only one permit (either-sex) for one of the open counties and all participating young people must have completed an IDNR-approved hunter education course.

        Anna Arts Center to host fall festival

        The Anna Arts Center at 117 W. Davie St. in Anna is planning to host a Fall Arts Festival Oct. 26-28.

        A “Monster Mash Ball” dinner, entertainment and costume contest are planned at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26.

        The cost is $10; the cost for those who do both the Monster Bash Ball and a Haunted Old City Hall is $12.

        A number of activities are planned Saturday, Oct. 27, during the Fall Festival.

        Legislators visit Union County school

        Students at Jonesboro School had a special civics lesson just about a month before the 2012 general election.

        Two Southern Illinois legislators visited with 4th grade students at the Union County school Wednesday morning, Oct. 3.

        The students are in the classes of Jonesboro co-teachers Marsha Griffin and Marcy Bundren. The two classes have about 41 students.

        Guests of the school were State Sen. Gary Forby, D-Benton, and State Rep. Mike Bost, R-Murphysboro. Both men represent Union County in the state legislature.

        PAST board works on plans for local tours, carols event

        The September meeting of the board for the PAST organization of Union County was a busy one as chairpersons reported about final details of upcoming projects.

        Barbara Bauer, Susan Whitemountain and Lee Hackney showed proofs of the ColorFest walking tour books featuring West Railroad Street (now West Vienna Street) in Anna. 

        The completed books are for sale at Country Cupboard and in the display case at This ‘N That on S. Main St. in Anna.

        Terry L. Hindman

        <strong>Mr. Terry L. Hindman, age 78, of Fairview Heights, formerly of Jonesboro, died at 2:26 A.M. Sunday October 7, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville. He was born July 12, 1934 in Jonesboro, the son of Paul William “Pat” and Olive Mae Casper Hindman. He married Jeanette Hoyle in 1956.  She preceded him in death.</strong>
