ColorFest: Chili cookoff

The Downtown Anna organization is planning to sponsor a chili cookoff Saturday, Oct. 13.

The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Anna.

The cookoff will be taking place during the 2012 Union County ColorFest celebration.

Trophies will be awarded to chili cookoff winners for first, second and third place. Trophies will be donated by Down Home Do-Dads.

Votes to select the winners will be cast by those who visit downtown Anna and taste chilis entered in the competition.

ColorFest: Stinson Library events

The Friends of Stinson Library are planning ColorFest activities, beginning with a book sale from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12.

The book sale will be in the lower auditorium at Stinson Memorial Library in Anna.

Activities also are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.  

Events will include a flea market, a book sale, crafts, jewelry, food and music. Up to 60 vendors are expected to participate.

The group Banjovi is scheduled to perform Saturday, Oct. 13.

Herrin tops A-J 37-28

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team closed out its regular season with a 37-28 loss to host Herrin in a non-conference game Friday night, Oct. 19.

“We played better than we did the week before, but we’re not doing what we did earlier in the season,” said A-J football coach, Brett Detering.

“We’re not tackling well. For some reason, we’re not making the tackles we made earlier. We have to make the necessary adjustments.”

The Wildcats end the regular season with a 6-3 record. The Tigers  improved to 5-4.

ColorFest: Cobden

A ColorFest Festival is planned Saturday, Oct. 13, in Cobden.

The festival will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The Old Feed Store in downtown Cobden.

Activities are scheduled to include:

Arts and crafts vendors.

Local musicians.

Children’s activities, including face painting, pumpkin painting and hayrides.

Fresh pressed cider.

Brats and hot dogs.


        Car show, yard sales set in Cobden

        The Village of Cobden is expected to be a busy place Saturday, Oct. 6.

        A car show, a community yard sale day, special hours at a local museum and a book signing are planned Saturday.

        Fall Fest Car Show

        A Fall Fest Car Show is planned Saturday, Oct. 6, in the park in downtown Cobden.

        Southern Counties Autos Unlimited plans to sponsor a nonjudged car show featuring a variety of models of vehicles.

        The event is scheduled to begin at noon and will continue into the evening.

        Columbia edges A-J at regional

        Enrique Arreola and Garrett Nadeau each scored an unassisted goal to lead Anna-Jonesboro Community High School’s soccer team’s efforts in a 3-2 loss to host Columbia in the first round of the high school boys’ Class 1A Waterloo Gibault regional Tuesday, Oct. 9.

        Arreoloa and Noah Fuller each had 4 shots on goal and Nadeau had 3. Marcus Taylor and Ben Godinez each had a shot on goal.

        A-J goalkeeper Steven Wells had 8 saves in 80 minutes.

        Massac County lost 7-0 to Waterloo Gibault in another first-round game.

        PAST board works on plans for local tours, carols event

        The September meeting of the board for the PAST organization of Union County was a busy one as chairpersons reported about final details of upcoming projects.

        Barbara Bauer, Susan Whitemountain and Lee Hackney showed proofs of the ColorFest walking tour books featuring West Railroad Street (now West Vienna Street) in Anna. 

        The completed books are for sale at Country Cupboard and in the display case at This ‘N That on S. Main St. in Anna.

        Health fair location changed

        Union County Hospital in Anna is planning to host its 12th annual health fair Friday, Oct. 5.

        Due to the threat of bad weather on Friday, the location of the health fair has been moved from the hospital to the lower gymnasium at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

        Hours for the event are still scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

        Lab draws still are planned from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the main lobby at Union County Hospital.
