<strong>Mrs. Anna Marie Cole, age 58 of Jonesboro, died at 10:12 pm, Thursday September 20, 2012 at the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Anna was born on July 4, 1954 in Ottawa, the daughter of John and Mildred (Roads) Semyck. She married Ralph M. Cole on August 4, 1989 in Anna.</strong>
Union County officials are hoping to obtain grant funds that will help to raise some local roads above flood elevation.
The issue was on the agenda at last Friday morning's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners. The meeting was at the community center in Jonesboro.
County engineer Kevin Grammer said he is working to obtain grant funding for improvements on five area roads which are prone to flooding.
Improvements are being considered for the Cavaness, Morgan School, Kaolin, Galilee and Ware-Wolf Lake roads.
<strong>Mr. Richard Lee “Rib” Davis, age 86 of Cobden, died at 8:02 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2012 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Anna. He was born May 17, 1926 in El Paso, Texas, the son of John Wesley and Hattie Alzada Davis. He married Allie-Jane Miller on September 13, 1953 in Cobden.</strong>
The Illinois Department of Transportation, IDOT, is alerting motorists who plan to travel on new U.S. Route 51 from Makanda to Anna about lane reductions.
Highway contractors began patching work on Friday, Sept. 7, along new U.S. Route 51 between Makanda and Anna.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in various locations to allow the contractor to patch the highway.
Traffic will be controlled by flaggers. The work is planned during daytime hours only.
<strong> Mrs. Linda M. Waltner, age 63 of Cobden, formerly of Monee, IL, died at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2012 at her brothers home in Cobden. She was born July 11, 1949 in Chicago, the daughter of Clyde and Mary Pusich Waltner.</strong>
<strong> Linda is survived by her brother Richard Waltner of Cobden; cousins; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.</strong>
<strong>Mr. Charles Leon Eaves, age 72 of Johnson City, Tennessee, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, September 14, 2012 in the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was born July 20, 1940 in Cobden, the son of Noble and Zella Adams Eaves.</strong>
Southern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days are planned Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23, at John A. Logan College in Carterville.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Southern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days include a wide range of activities for those of all ages.
Among the many highlights are wildlife programs, seminars, an art and heritage show, bluegrass music, goose and duck calling, youth goose calling, activities for children and food.
<strong>Mr. Francis E. “Sonny” Sims, age 72 of Cobden, died at 9:42 p.m. Thursday, September 13, 2012 in the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born August 9, 1940 in Jonesboro, the son of Samuel Lloyd and Alma Irene Smith Sims.</strong>
<strong>Mr. Harold W. Smith, age 61 of Wolf Lake, died at 7:20 p.m. Monday, September 24, 2012 in the Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was born January 1, 1951 in Wolf Lake, the son of Ellis and Virginia Hamel Smith. He married Norleen Brown on October 24, 1998 in Grand Tower.</strong>
