PAST will highlight Railroad Street in Anna during ColorFest event

The PAST ColorFest committee met recently to make plans for the third annual “Walk PAST” self-guided tour book.

Anna’s historical neighborhood which will be featured in 2012 is the block of buildings and businesses near the railroad depot site on present-day West Vienna Street.  

The guide book will focus on sites from Main Street to Green Street along historical “Railroad Street” over the past 150 years.

Road work scheduled on Route 51

The Illinois Department of Transportation, IDOT, is alerting motorists who plan to travel on new U.S. Route 51 from Makanda to Anna about lane reductions.

Highway contractors began patching work on Friday, Sept. 7, along new U.S. Route 51 between Makanda and Anna.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in various locations to allow the contractor to patch the highway.

Traffic will be controlled by flaggers. The work is planned during daytime hours only.

Chili cookoff scheduled Oct. 13 in downtown Anna

The Downtown Anna organization is planning to sponsor a chili cookoff Saturday, Oct. 13.

The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Anna.

The cookoff will be taking place during the 2012 Union County ColorFest celebration.

Trophies will be awarded to chili cookoff winners for first, second and third place. Trophies will be donated by Down Home Do-Dads.

Votes to select the winners will be cast by those who visit downtown Anna and taste chilis entered in the competition.

25th Annual Hunting, Fishing Days scheduled

Southern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days are planned Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23, at John A. Logan College in Carterville.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Southern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days include a wide range of activities for those of all ages.

Among the many highlights are wildlife programs, seminars, an art and heritage show, bluegrass music, goose and duck calling, youth goose calling, activities for children and food.

Martha Elizabeth Johnson

<strong>Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Johnson, age 85 of Anna died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2012 in the Anna Rehab and Healthcare Center in Anna. She was born November 27, 1926 in Miller City, the daughter of Jessie and Birdie Parks Winters.</strong>

Bomb squad responds to incident

No injuries were reported in the aftermath of an incident Thursday morning, Sept. 13, at The Gazette-Democrat's office in Anna.

The incident involved a hand grenade used for training purposes.

Authorities said the grenade was considered to be live. However, a member of the bomb squad also explained that "as it sat, it would not go off."

The weapon had been left on the desk of Jerry L. Reppert, the publisher of The Gazette-Democrat.

A-J boys’ soccer opens season

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ soccer team began  the season with a 2-2-1 record.

A-J 1, Harrisburg 1: Enrique Arreola scored A-J’s only goal in a 1-1 tie Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Steven Wells played 80 minutes in goal for A-J and had 7 saves.

A-J 8, Columbia Junior Varsity 3: Garrett Nadeau scored three goals to lead the Wildcats to the win in their final game of the Metro Cup Tournament at Belleville Saturday, Aug. 25.

Harold W. Smith

<strong>Mr. Harold W. Smith, age 61 of Wolf Lake, died at 7:20 p.m. Monday, September 24, 2012 in the Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was born January 1, 1951 in Wolf Lake, the son of Ellis and Virginia Hamel Smith. He married Norleen Brown on October 24, 1998 in Grand Tower.</strong>

Voting in Calendar Cuties contest set to begin Oct. 1, runs through Oct. 19

The Gazette-Democrat is sponsoring its first Calendar Cuties Contest.

The contest is open to any parent or grandparent in Union County.

Voting in the contest is scheduled to begin Oct. 1 at The Gazette-Democrat office in Anna. Voting ends Oct. 19.

The newspaper plans to have a booth in downtown Anna during October's ColorFest celebration where votes can be cast.
