ColorFest pageants set; registration this Sunday

The seventh annual Union County ColorFest Pageants are planned Friday, Oct. 12.

The pageants will take place in the gymnasium at Jonesboro School.

All Union County girls ages 3-10 are welcome to sign up.  

Two pageants are planned: 5-6-year-olds are in the Little Miss Pageant and 7-10-year-olds are in the Miss Pageant.  

No pageant dresses are needed; the girls will wear casual fall attire.  

Registration Planned

Registration is planned from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Jonesboro Fire Department.

A-JCHS Board approves employment of seven persons

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School District 81 Board of Education recently approved the employment of persons to fill seven positions.

The action came at the board’s regular monthly meeting for August.

The following persons were employed:

Krystal Emrick as physical education department head. Leslie Neitzer and Courtney Garner as science department co-chairpersons.

Cindi Eidson and Dave Sullivan as blood drive co-coordinators. Michael Goins as bus driver (on probation for one year). Geoffrey Bond as clerical aide/transportation.

Anna-Jo Garden Club celebrates 60th anniversary

 The Anna-Jo Garden Club celebrated its 60th anniversary during a monthly meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the United Methodist Church in Anna.  

Judy Casper, Marsha Burke and Susan Sherwin coordinated the celebration and each gave a segment about the history of the club.  

The club was organized on Sept. 29, 1952.  A booklet was made to show how the present meeting was planned to closely parallel that of the first club meeting. Present and past officers were stated, as was the past and present program.  

Richard Lee “Rib” Davis

<strong>Mr. Richard Lee “Rib” Davis, age 86 of Cobden, died at 8:02 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2012 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Anna. He was born May 17, 1926 in El Paso, Texas, the son of John Wesley and Hattie Alzada Davis. He married Allie-Jane Miller on September 13, 1953 in Cobden.</strong>

Jonesboro Council approves rate increases

The Jonesboro City Council last week approved an ordinance which sets new water and sewer rates for customers in the Union County community.

The ordinance was approved at the city council’s regular meeting on Tuesday night, Sept. 4.

The new rates go into effect on Oct. 1.

The rates reflect increases in the cost of operations. The city is expecting an increase in the rate it pays for water from its supplier. The city purchases water from the Anna-Jonesboro Water Commission.

Jonesboro has about 825 utility customers.

Education office's future discussed by county board

Uncertainty continues to surround the future of regional offices of education.

The issue was discussed at last Friday morning's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was at the community center in Jonesboro.

Board of commissioners chairman Randy Lambdin is representing the county on a committee which is considering the future of a local educational service region.

Union County is part of a region which includes five counties. The other counties in the region are Alexander, Johnson, Massac and Pulaski.

Eva Lucille “Tillie” Rich

<strong>Mrs. Eva Lucille “Tillie” Rich, age 83 of Carbondale, died at 6:10 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at the Rehab & Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro. She was born April 8, 1929 at her home in Cobden, the daughter of Wilburn and Ruby Garner Yates. She married David L. Rich on June 5, 1949 in Cobden. He preceded her in death on November 2, 1981.</strong>

Pumpkin patch popular

Hundreds of people visited a u-pick pumpkin patch near Anna when it opened for the season Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22.

The pumpkin patch is a project sponsored by the high school youth group at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anna. The patch is located along Illinois Route 146 about 1 mile east of the Walmart supercenter store in Anna.

Organizers say that each year, the pumpkin patch expands its appeal to young people and adults. A free corn maze is a popular addition for 2012.

Clifton Warren Bennett

Clifton Warren Bennett, age 62 of Dongola, died Tuesday, September, 25, 2012 at 10:00AM  at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion.

He was born September 19, 1950 to Andrew and Betty (Johns) Bennett in Anna.

Clifton served in the United State Marine Corps.  He enjoyed riding horses and motorcycles.
