<strong>Mr. Paul Leonard Williams, age 86 of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Cobden, died at 10:16 a.m. Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO. He was born March 1, 1926 in Royalton, the son of Rassie and Mabel Childers Williams. He married Dorothy L. Smith on September 24, 1945 in St. Louis, MO. She preceded him in death on October 24, 2000.</strong>
Arguing that Gov. Pat Quinn’s push to close several state prisons is worsening dangerous overcrowding and that inappropriate inmate transfers pose a safety risk to prison workers, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFSCME, Council 31 filed suit Aug. 2 in Alexander County.
The union reported in a news release that it is seeking an injunction to halt the threatened closure of prisons at Dwight and Tamms, adult transition centers in Carbondale, Chicago and Decatur, and youth centers in Joliet and Murphysboro.
The Alto Pass Fire Department and the Jonesboro Fire Department are planning to have a fund raiser Saturday, Sept. 8, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Alto Vineyards in Alto Pass.
The event is being billed as “The Southern Illinois Wine-Shine.”
Local volunteer firefighters will be hosting Tim Smith and Tickle, stars of “The Moonshiners” on The Discovery Channel.
The local band DiamondBack is scheduled to perform.
The event also will feature food served by both fire departments.

Gavyn Ellet had a .399 batting average to lead Murphysboro’s American Legion baseball team this summer. He was one of five Union County area players to play on that team.
Ellet had 53 RBIs to go with a .673 slugging percentage, 7 home runs, 2 triples and 17 doubles. He also had a 2-2 pitching record with an ERA of 4.38 to go with 31 strikeouts and 18 walks.
Rev. Lucien Ray Bozarth, 75, of Cape Girardeau, and formerly of Dongola, died at 11:58 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born on Nov. 7, 1936, in Centralia, the son of Lucien E. and Emma Unile Gambill Bozarth.
He was married on July 14, 1957 to Jean, and she preceded him in death Jan. 11, 2005. He then married Alice on Aug. 26, 2006.
Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Thursday, Aug. 16, that Travis Farris, 24, of 161 Hillside Terrace in Anna has been sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one count of unlawful participation in methamphetamine production.
The charge is a Class 1 felony.
Edmonds said that under Illlinois law, Farris must serve at least 75 percent of the sentence.
Community members are invited to meet the new president of Shawnee Community College at an upcoming reception.
The reception is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the college's extension center in Anna.
Dr. Tim Bellamey is the new president of Shawnee Community College.
Bellamey says that he is looking forward to strengthening the relationships between the community and college.
Two Union County women have been indicted on charges which include drug induced homicide in connection with a man's death in 2011.
Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced the charges on Monday.
Edmonds said a Union County grand jury had returned indictments against Angie V. Liljegren, 58, of 3825 Christian Chapel Rd., and Sandra L. Smith, 52, of 3550 Christian Chapel Rd. Both addresses are in rural Dongola.
The two women are charged in connection with the death of Zane Smith in September 2011.

Riley Andrew Degginger, 5, of Granby, Colorado, earned his angel wings peacefully on Saturday, August 4, 2012, after a year-long battle with a rare brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). He was in the arms of his parents, Andrew and Mary Ann Degginger, and with his little sister Micah.
