Anna man sentenced on meth charge

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Thursday, Aug. 16, that Travis Farris, 24, of 161 Hillside Terrace in Anna has been sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one count of unlawful participation in methamphetamine production.

The charge is a Class 1 felony.

Edmonds said that under Illlinois law, Farris must serve at least 75 percent of the sentence.

IDNR shares updates about hunting permits

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, IDNR, shares the following items of interest:

Firearm Deer Permits

Permit applications will be accepted through Sept. 10 for random daily drawings for 2012 Illinois firearm and muzzleloader deer permits.

Jack-n-Jill Scramble played at Anna course

Elijah Sentel and Lauren Bond shot a 129 to win the A Flight of the Jack-n-Jill Golf Scramble played at the Union County Country Club golf course in Anna Sunday, Aug. 12.

Jerry Hale and Margaret Caksakkar took second place in A flight, shooting a 130.

The teams of Steve and Rhoda Bond and Connie and Robbin Dodson finished tied for third place with a 131.

There was also a tie for fifth place, with a score of 132, involving the teams of James Banken and Sissy Donahue and Kenny and Roberta Sentel.

Shawnee College planning Meet the President event

Community members are invited to meet the new president of Shawnee Community College at an upcoming reception.

The reception is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the college's extension center in Anna.

Dr. Tim Bellamey is the new president of Shawnee Community College.

Bellamey says that he is looking forward to strengthening the relationships between the community and college.

Anna City Council hears about new communications services

A preview of new communications services which will be available through the Union County Sheriff's Office was presented at last week's regular meeting of the Anna City Council.

The meeting was Tuesday evening, Aug. 21, at Anna City Hall.

Union County Sheriff David Livesay and Capt. Scott Harvel of the sheriff's office were guests at the meeting.

Livesay and Harvel updated Anna city officials about communications capabilities the sheriff's office will have once it moves into a new county courthouse.

‘Great show’: Anna Arts Center stages musical revue

Radiant in the second production of the year, the Anna Arts Center celebrated hit performances with “A Grand Night for Singing” July 27-29.

That musical revue, “A Grand Night for Singing,” was packed with more than 30 tunes by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II.

Juanita V. Sadler

<strong>Juanita V. Sadler, age 72 of Anna, died at 9:35 am, Thursday August 9, 2012 at her home in Anna.  She was born on November 18, 1939 in Anna, the daughter of Rolla and Mollie Russell Morgan.  Juanita married Lee Sadler on December 12, 1966 in Murphysboro. </strong>

Riley Andrew Degginger

Richard and Kay Schaefer and the Schaefer family of Wolf Lake express sincere thanks for the many prayers and kind thoughts shared by friends, local churches and members of the community as their grandson battled cancer over the last year.

Riley Andrew Degginger, 5, of Granby, Colorado, earned his angel wings peacefully on Saturday, August 4, 2012, after a year-long battle with a rare brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). He was in the arms of his parents, Andrew and Mary Ann Degginger, and with his little sister Micah.

Valerie Pender new Union County Fair Queen

The 2012 Union County Fair queen was crowned last Sunday night.

The pageant was held in front of the Henry Don Dillow grandstand at the fair in Anna.

Valerie Pender of Jonesboro was crowned as the new fair queen. She is the daughter of Darrell Pender and Cindy Pender.

Clare Bunyan of Cobden was crowned as first runner-up in the pageant. She is the daughter of Chris Bunyan and Jill Bunyan.

Second runner-up in the pageant was Janna Harner of Anna. She is the daughter of Scott Harner and Janet Harner.

Only one senior on A-J boys’ golf team

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ golf team will be working to gain experience during the 2012 season.

“We’re awfully young and inexperienced,” A-J golf coach Cory Miller said.

“Hopefully, we’ll make improvement through the year and by tournament time be very competitive.”

Michael Tripp is the only senior on the Wildcats’ roster this season. Joseph Tingley and Brock Goforth are juniors.

“I’m looking for Michael Tripp to have a good year,” Miller said. “We hope (Joseph) Tingley and (Brock) Goforth pull their weight, too.”
