Veterans Day service set in Cobden

A Veterans Day service is planned Monday, Nov. 12, in Cobden.

The service is set for 9 a.m. at the veterans monument at the Cobden Community Park.

Clair Bunyan will sing. Pastor Rex Goforth is scheduled to be the guest speaker.

A wreath ceremony will be presented by the Cobden American Legion.

Refreshments will be served at the end of the service.

In the event of rain, the service will be held under the pavilion at the Cobden park.

Tuesday, Nov. 6, is Election Day

After months of watching campaigns unfold, voters will get to go to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 6, to cast their ballots in the 2012 general election.

Voters in Union County will be able to help elect a president of the United States.

They also will determine the outcome of several countywide races, as well as a local proposition which could impact how much they pay for electricity.

Local Races

At the local level, voters will pick three county commissioners, a circuit clerk, a state's attorney and a coroner in next Tuesday's election.

Johnston City nips A-J 60-59

Anna-Jonesboro missed a last-second shot in a 60-59 loss to Johnston City Monday, Nov. 26, in first-round action in high school boys’ basketball tournament action at Goreville.

The Indians made several fourth quarter free throws to spoil the Wildcats’ season-opener.

The Wildcats led 21-17 after one quarter, but the Indians fought back to tie the game 32-32 at halftime.

Johnston City led 49-43 heading into the fourth quarter.

Tyler Vaughn led A-J with 14 points and 3 rebounds.

Paul “Pete” Dunning

Paul “Pete” Dunning, 89, of Tamms, died at 1:10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion.

He was born in Tamms on Jan. 28, 1923, the son of Frank and Lena Gossett Dunning.

He was a member of Tamms Baptist Church, the Mounds Senior Citizens Center and formerly the Tamms Senior Citizens, where he played in the kitchen band. He also belonged to the Moose Club in Des Plaines.

PAST planning holiday tour Nov. 17

Three historic homes and the First Baptist Church of Anna are scheduled to be open for touring on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

That is the date for a holiday tour sponsored by the PAST organization of Union County.

Tickets and maps ($15 for all or $5 per home) will be available at each of the homes belonging to:

Joel and Marie Dallas, 408 W. Spring, Anna.

Tyler and Kasey Clutts (the former Lingle School), 4290 Lingle Creek Rd., Jonesboro.

Bob and Elaine Crain, above the funeral home at 135 W. Vienna, Anna.

Dongola boys tie for first places at Crab Orchard

The Dongola High School boys’ basketball team finished in a three-way tie for first place with host Crab Orchard and Pope County at the Crab Orchard Turkey Tournament Saturday, Nov. 24.

Each team finished with a 4-1 tournament record.

Dongola 58, Hardin County 50: Darius Schauer scored 18 points to lead the Demons to Saturday’s win. Tyler Eddleman added 16 points.

Bradley Ralls scored 10 points, Brock Patterson 8 and Alex Zeschke 6.

Cobden students present 'Grease'

Cobden Junior-Senior High School presented the musical "Grease" Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1-3.

Performances were presented Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon.

The musical was staged in the Cobden High School gymnasium.

The accompanying pictures were taken at Friday night's performance.

The musical was staged through the efforts of volunteers.

Lick Creek wins consolation title

The Lick Creek School girls’ basketball team defeated Adams School 45-26 to win the consolation bracket championship game at the Unity Point junior high school tournament Saturday, Oct. 29.

Elle Basler scored 9 points, had 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals to lead Lick Creek. Madison Root had 8 points, a rebound and an assist.

Makenzie Chaney had 5 points, 2 assists and a rebound. Sydney Heath had 5 points, 2 rebounds and an assist. Bailey Hooks had 4 points, 3 steals and 2 rebounds.
