A-J football players earn postseason honors

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team had six players selected to the 2012 Southern Illnois River-to-River Mississippi Division All-Conference team.

Junior Damien Reed and senior Logan Tripp were both selected to the offensive and defensive all-conference teams.

Reed was  a running back on offense and a linebacker on defense. Tripp was a lineman on both offense and defense.

Seniors Alex McRaven and Seth Heern were also selected to both the offensive and defensive all-conference teams.

To the editor,

My fellow Americans: By now a new president has been elected and the winning party will be declaring that things will be better in the future, because they have a plan.

However, you know when it comes to the economy, things will not be better, regardless which party gains control.

The national debt proves it. No matter what party controls the government, the debt always increases.

Why? Because those elected know they can stay in power, as long as they payoff their constituents in pork.

<strong>Mr. Russell H. Miller, age 81 of Anna, died at 7:57 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the Anna Rehab and Care Center Anna. He was born September 14, 1931 in Anna, the son of Benjamin A. and Sibyl Lence Miller. He married Sandra Sue Rhodes on June 19, 2007 in Anna.  She preceded him in death on May 27, 2009.</strong>

Lisa Cheryl Lynn Kerley

Lisa Cheryl Lynn Kerley, 46, of Johnston City, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at 4:08 p.m. at the Herrin Hospital in Herrin.

She was born Nov. 25, 1965 in Sikeston, Mo. She was the daughter of Freddie Gene Akridge and Geraldine Dianna (Magee) Akridge.

Toy drive planned at A-JCHS

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FCA, is planning to sponsor its first holiday toy drive,  which will benefit the Toys for Tots program.  

Members of the FCA group will be collecting new toys on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the A-JCHS girls' basketball game.

Toys also will be collected Saturday, Dec. 8, at the A-JCHS boys' basketball game.

Students will begin collecting toys in the A-JCHS gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. on both days.

Grand jury indicts man on three charges

A Union County man has been indicted on armed robbery and other charges.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported the indictment Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Edmonds said that a Union County grand jury returned indictments against Heath P. Tellor, 27, of 300 Mary St. in Jonesboro.

Tellor is charged with one count of armed robbery, a Class X felony; one count of armed violence, a Class X felony; and one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class 1 felony.

Veterans Day

On Sunday, November 11, the people of Union County will join the rest of the nation in observing Veterans Day.

A number of special events are planned here in Union County in observance of Veterans Day. Local churches are planning to honor the men and women who have served our nation, and a big Veterans Day parade is scheduled in Anna.

We hope that everyone will take at least a moment or two out of their schedule on Sunday to pause and reflect on the sacrifice made by America's veterans, some of whom paid the ultimate price to guarantee our freedom.

Robert ‘Bob’ Davis

Robert “Bob” Davis, 68, of Dongola, died at 8:33 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on August 18, 1944 in Dongola, the son of Elijah and Lola Mae Hartline Davis.  

He married Merta Lacer on March 8, 1967.

He served in the U.S. Army.  He had worked at Florsheim Shoe Company in Anna and Cape Girardeau, as well as working 11 years for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

He served on the cemetery board at St. John’s for over 25 years.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Hileman, Miller, Cunningham win Union County races

More than 8,300 voters cast ballots in Tuesdays' Union County general election.

Winners in contested county races on Tuesday included:

For Union County coroner: Democrat Phil Hileman of Jonesboro defeated Republican Beverly J. Bolanowski of Anna by a margin of 4,845 to 3,266.

For Union County commissioner, Seat D, six-year term: Republican Max Miller of Anna defeated Democrat Wayne Brown of Dongola by a vote of 4,210 to 3,576.
