Letters: How to save the country

To the editor,

My fellow Americans: By now a new president has been elected and the winning party will be declaring that things will be better in the future, because they have a plan.

However, you know when it comes to the economy, things will not be better, regardless which party gains control.

The national debt proves it. No matter what party controls the government, the debt always increases.

Why? Because those elected know they can stay in power, as long as they payoff their constituents in pork.

So, our own personal greed to get "our share" of the pie before the other fellow drives this endless cycle of mismanagement and corruption. We the people are to blame.

As a result we find ourselves, as a nation, to be the greatest debtor in human history.

We often hear of our national debt being 14-plus trillion dollars, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

If unfunded federal liabilities are considered, Social Security and Medicare, etc., the total could be somewhere between 60 and 100 trillion dollars.

What does that mean? We're so far in debt, there is no way, on our own, we can recover. It's literally impossible. So, what can we do?

Our history seems to indicate two trends in dealing with this impending disaster.

The first is as old as our country. I call it the "King Hezekiah approach" (2 Kings 19:12-19).

King Hezekiah, as a result of boasting, divulged all the secrets of Judah to a visiting ambassador from Babylon.

Isaiah the prophet told him that the country would be plundered, in the future, by the Babylonians, as a result of his foolish pride.

Hezekiah's response, at least it won't happen in my days, so he did nothing to prepare.

Sure enough it did happen, (2 Kings 25: 4-21) and not during Hezekiah's lifetime, so he was happy. A selfish response, sound familiar?

The second is a newcomer, having only been around a few decades, and it's called the "Rambo approach."

These are the survivalists, who hoard as much food and ammo as they can afford, to prepare for the apocalypse.

However, without heat, sanitation and water, how long could a person last? Granted there might be a few people who could live off the land, but they would be rare, in these days.

And how many of us could shoot our neighbor if they tried to steal a can of beans? Who could defend the property when the owner slept? Another selfish response.

Neither method does anything to correct the problem, before it's too late.

So what is going to happen? When the economy of the United States finally fails, the world economy will follow suit.

Nothing will be of value except things that are tangible, and a person can only own what he can defend. The Biblical tribulation will be upon us.

But there is a way out. It's not too late, yet.

God alone can save us, if we listen to His words in 2 Chronicles 7:14, "and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

The time is now to turn back to God, and away from our wicked ways, if we want to survive as a nation. "Choose life." Deuteronomy 30:19.
