Lady Indians volleyball team makes history

The Anna Junior High School Lady Indians volleyball team made history this season. For the first time since the inception of a volleyball team at Anna Junior High School, the Indians won their regional tournament and advanced to the state tournament in Nashville.The Indians played at noon Saturday, March 29, against Wayne City. The Indians beat Wayne City in two sets to advance to the semifinal round. The Indians went on to place fourth at the state tournament.

Manuel Eugene “Gene” Morgan

Manuel Eugene “Gene” Morgan, age 92 of Anna, died at 3:45 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014 in the Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. He was born January 3, 1922 in Marion, the son of Roderick J. and Dora Rendleman Morgan. He married Patricia Deming and later, Rachel Wasson. Both preceded him in death.

Not all that many weeks ago, Union County Highway Department vehicles were being utilized to clear snow and ice off local roads.

Last Friday morning, a highway department snowplow was being used to clear debris off the State Forest Road between Jonesboro and Wolf Lake.

The debris was on the road following severe spring storms which swept through the region last Thursday night and early Friday morning.

Jesse E. White, Jr.

Jesse E. White, Jr., 99, of Elco, died at 5:50AM Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Marion.

Jesse was born Nov 13, 1914 in Mounds, son of Jesse Earl and Rosa Heater White Sr. He married Reba West on Aug. 29, 1947, she preceded him in death on Jan, 20, 2008.

Mary Josephine “Jody” Flummer

Mary Josephine “Jody” Flummer of Carbondale, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Cape Girardeau.

Memorial service for Mary Flummer will be held Friday, April 4, 2014 at 6:00 PM at the Caledonia Community Church in Olmsted, Illinois.

Officials visit Trail of Tears sites in area counties

Eight officials from various national and state agencies spent Tuesday, April 8, visiting various Trail of Tears sites in Pope, Johnson and Union counties.

The officials visited locations that have been certified as sites visited or trail segments that were part of the 1838-1839 Cherokee Trail of Tears when the Cherokee Nation was removed from North Carolina to Oklahoma.
