Paul Marr

Mr. Paul Marr, age 88 of Jonesboro, died at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014 in the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Anna. He was born May 28, 1925 in Tekamah, Nebraska the son of Vere Frederick and Mabel Mildred Miller Marr. He married Donna Foster. She preceded him in death on March 23, 2013.

Alto Pass Springfest planned

A Springfest celebration is planned Saturday, May 24, in Alto Pass.

Activities are planned from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Springfest is presented with the support of event sponsors and the Alto Pride Community Group.

Here's a look at the schedule for Springfest:

8 a.m. to 4 p.m., trade fair. Silent auction in the community center.

9 a.m., parade.

10 a.m., fire department water fights.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m., treasure hunt, dunk tank, bounce house, games.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m., barbeque meal in the community center.

JoAnn Levato

JoAnn Levato, age 58 of Jonesboro, died at 11:18 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2014 in the Union County Hospital in Anna. She was born October 15, 1955, the daughter of Anthony Martin and Olga Levato.

JoAnn is survived by her sister, Rosette Biegerstaff of McLeansboro; one brother, Russell Levato of Mt. Vernon; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Donald Lee Woods

Donald Lee Woods, 75, of Batavia, and formerly of Anna, died Saturday, May 24, 2014.

He was born on May 30, 1938, in Anna, the son of Lawrence and Lois Hankla Woods.

He married Wanda Lee Spurlock on Nov. 24, 1956, in Anna.

He worked at General Mills in West Chicago for 52 years before his retirement in 2013. He dedicated his life to the company, never missing a day of work for 42 years.

He was an avid country music fan. He liked riding his motorcycle, gardening and his family.

<strong>Dr. Tim Bellamey, left, was among those who joined in congratulating the 2014 Union County Top Achievers last Friday during a program at the Anna VFW post. Bellamey is the president of Shawnee Community College. The Top Achievers represented each of Union County's four public high schools. The Top Achievers from Anna-Jonesboro, Cobden and Dongola high schools attended the program. Students from Shawnee High School were not able to attend.</strong>

Barn quilt designed to help boost area tourism

In an effort to help boost tourism in the area, the Southern Illinois Electric Cooperative, SIEC, hung a 10-foot by 10-foot barn quilt Wednesday afternoon, May 7, at its facilities in Dongola. 

The quilt was hung on the side of a truck storage building.  

Motorists will be able to see the colorful display when they drive by SIEC headquarters in the Union County community.

The barn quilt features an image of Willie Wiredhand. The image previously had served as a logo for electric cooperatives located throughout the country.

Ruby F. Davis

Ruby F. Davis, 88, of Joliet, and formerly of Carbondale, died Monday, April 21, 2014, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

She was born on April 28, 1925, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., the daughter of Hobert and Mamie Spires Vinson.

She married William Harold Davis on March 1, 1947. He preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1985.

She worked at Woolworth Company for 10 years in Chicago and the Good Luck Glove Company in Carbondale. She liked to crochet and to do embroidery and quilting.

Aileen C. Dillow

Aileen C. Dillow, 93, passed away April 13, 2014, at her home in Apple Valley, CA. Born July 7, 1920, in Cobden, Ill., Aileen was a 35-year resident of Apple Valley and a 71-year resident of California.

Aileen was active in the Apple Valley Senior Citizens Club, Victorville Senior Citizens Club and the Apple Valley Grange.
