Mary Josephine “Jody” Flummer of Carbondale, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Cape Girardeau.

Memorial service for Mary Flummer will be held Friday, April 4, 2014 at 6:00 PM at the Caledonia Community Church in Olmsted, Illinois.

Officials visit Trail of Tears sites in area counties

Eight officials from various national and state agencies spent Tuesday, April 8, visiting various Trail of Tears sites in Pope, Johnson and Union counties.

The officials visited locations that have been certified as sites visited or trail segments that were part of the 1838-1839 Cherokee Trail of Tears when the Cherokee Nation was removed from North Carolina to Oklahoma.

The group of visitors who came to Southern Illinois included: 

Audrey Henderson Stroud

Audrey Henderson Stroud, 78, of Olive Branch, died at 4:48PM on Monday, April 21, 2014 at Saint Francis Medical Center.

Audrey was born Jan. 5, 1936 in Water Valley, KY, daughter of Virtice and Lela Morgan Via. She married Barney “Ted” Henderson on Oct. 16, 1954 and later married Gene Stroud on July 13, 1984.

She enjoyed reading her Bible, spending time with her family and working puzzle books.

Culture Night in Cobden

A full house was on hand for a Culture Night event which was hosted by Cobden Elementary School last Friday evening. The program showcased the cultures of nine different countries which students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade had been studying. The evening included displays about each of the countries, along with vocal music and a dance, which is featured in the accompanying picture.

Mr. Carroll G. Belcher

Mr. Carroll G. Belcher, age 87 of Anna, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at his home. He was born June 3, 1926 in Wolf Lake, the son of Roy and Dora Boyce Belcher. He married Dorothy Lee Conant on February 2, 1947 in Anna. She preceded him in death on April 11, 1991. He later married Vera Hale King on May 24, 1992 in Buncombe

Two men arrested in Anna murder case

Funeral services are planned Thursday, today, for an Anna man whose death has led to murder charges being filed against two Union County men.

Services for James H. "Jimmy" Morrison, 46, of Anna, are planned at 11 a.m. today at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna. Burial will be in the Busby Cemetery in Goreville.

Mr. Morrison died at 4 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at Union County Hospital in Anna.
