Wardell Barnhart

Mr. Wardell Barnhart, age 84 of Anna, died at 6:30 a.m. Monday, November 4, 2013 in the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born December 9, 1928 in Mill Creek, the son of Cletus and Selma Clyde Dillow Barnhart. He married Alta B. Karraker on October 1, 1948 in Jonesboro. She preceded him in death on March 24, 2005.

Clarence "CE" Penninger

Clarence "CE" Penninger, 72, of Kaneville, died in the early morning hours of Nov. 2, 2013, surrounded by family at his home.

Mr. Penninger was born on May 6, 1941, in Anna, the son of Clarence and Lois Boyd Penninger.

He attended local schools before graduating with the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School class of 1959.

He was a devoted member of the Village Bible Church in Sugar Grove.

Frances Hubbard Kirkpatrick McFadden

Frances Hubbard Kirkpatrick McFadden died on Oct. 15, 2013, at her home in Denver, Colo. She was born on Oct. 23, 1920.

She married Bruce McFadden on Sept. 22, 1947, in Anna.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce; a grandson, Lee Cline; and a granddaughter, Freedom Thompson.

She was the great-granddaughter of Cornwall E. Kirkpatrick, who, along with his brother, Wallace, founded the Anna Pottery in 1859. She was a graduate of Anna-Jonesboro Community High School and Hanover College.

Anna man honored for bravery during time as prisoner of war

A local man recently was honored for the bravery he displayed during World War II.

Kenneth Mueller of Anna was presented with a certificate of special recognition by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mueller is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Anna.

Mueller served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was assigned to the 418th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, European Theater of Operations as a radioman/gunner.

Mrs. Ruth Elaine Woods

       Mrs. Ruth Elaine Woods, age 75 of Anna, died at 11:41 am, Monday, October 28, 2013 at the Anna Rehab & Nursing Care Center. She was born November 23, 1937 in Lilburn, Arkansas, the daughter of Pearl Edwin Williams and Opal Stockdyle Knupp.

         Ruth is survived by her husband, Lawrence Junior Woods of Anna; one son, Wayne (Kim) Elkins of Anna; two daughters, Angie (Tim) Hargrave of Anna, Myra (Ron) Williams of Wolf Lake; six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Kenneth Wayne Frick

         Mr. Kenneth Wayne Frick, age 90 of Jonesboro, died at 11:05 a.m. Sunday, November 10, 2013 in the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Anna. He was born July 18, 1923 in Jonesboro, the son of Dan and Doris Ferrell Frick. He married Irma Jean Myers on January 19, 1947 in Osceola, Arkansas.

Filing set to begin for 2014 primary

Candidates can begin filing nominating petitions for the 2014 Union County primary election Monday morning, Nov. 25.

The primary election is set for March 18, 2014.

Nominating petitions are filed in the Union County clerk's office. The clerk's office is located in the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Filing continues through Dec. 2.

The first day for candidates to circulate nominating petitions was Sept. 3.

George E. Fitch

Mr. George E. Fitch, age 89 of Anna, formerly of Wolf Lake, died at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, November 13, 2013 in the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born January 15, 1924 in Makanda, the son of Edwin Bryden and Effie Lockard Fitch. He married Geraldine Hess on July 10, 1945 in Osceola, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2011.

State’s attorney reports sentencing of five persons

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds on Nov. 1 announced the following sentencing of five persons to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Jeanne L. Dalton, also known as Jeanne L. Rowan, 42, of 115 Kohler Ave., Anna, has been sentenced to five years after pleading guilty to one count of unlawful possession of controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class 1 felony.  

Leonard Leon Palmer

Leonard Leon Palmer, 82, of Cape Girardeau, died on Nov. 9, 2013, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on April 5, 1931, the son of Leonard and Louise Kelso Palmer in Stoddard County, Mo., and was raised in Wolf lake, where his family moved while he was still an infant.

He served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1954 on US Bataan 29 and later in Adak, Alaska. He married Patsy Wilson in Wolf Lake on Aug. 20, 1957.
