Garrett Marks was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs to lead the Cobden High School baseball team to a 5-4 win over host Goreville Saturday, April 13.

Tyler Lewey was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Appleknockers. J.T. Moore was 1-for-2.

Keegan Tripp was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. J.C. Chapman was 1-for-3. Zach Moore was 1-for-4.

Chapman was  the winning pitcher, scattering 6 hits to go with 12 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Lick Creek School’s girls’ basketball coach  Matt Denny was recently named the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association junior high school District 21 coach of the year.

“I couldn’t have done it with out my assistants John Basler and Rebecca Cunningham,” Denny said.

“The parents and their kids also are willing to work on basketball all year long, too.”

Lick Creek finished 23-3 this past season after finishing fourth at the Class S state basketball tournament.

The Anna-Jonesboro  Community High School girls’ soccer team went 1-1 in recent action.

Saxony 5, A-J 2: A-J was defeated 5-2 Monday, April 8, by visiting Saxony Lutheran of Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Hannah Schlenker and Katie Whiteside each scored a goal to lead the Lady Wildcats. Kati McIntyre added an assist.

Katie Grant played 80 minutes in goal and had 12 saves.

Authorities have identified a pedestrian who died in a traffic accident which was reported at about 3:08 a.m. Friday, April 12, on Interstate 57 in northeastern Union County.

The victim was identified as William Ernest Mundy, 57, of Warren, Mich.

Authorities reported that the man apparently was laying in the southbound passing lane on the interstate when he was struck by a pickup truck.

Two persons who were in the pickup truck were not injured.
