Veterans' Service Office in Murphysboro

The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs' Murphysboro Veterans’ Service Office now is located at the John A. Logan Museum at 1613 Edith St. in Murphysboro.

Kathy Bower is the Veteran Service Officer, VSO, in Murphysboro.

Bower serves as subject matter expert on federal, state and local benefits and programs which are available for the state’s veteran community.

The Murphysboro office is scheduled to be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Her phone number is 618-684-2966.

Donald “Sonny” Myers

<strong>Mr. Donald “Sonny” Myers, age 79 of Alto Pass, died at 5:02 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013 in the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born March 2, 1934 in Cobden, the son of Paul Bryan and Lillie Hinkle Myers. He married Marjorie Ann Dillow on May 10, 1952 in Piggott, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on December 23, 2008.</strong>

Spring Arts Festival planned this weekend

The fifth annual Shawnee Hills Spring Arts Festival is planned Friday through Sunday, April 26-28, at the Anna Arts Center.

The arts center is located at 117 W. Davie St. in Anna.

The three-day event will feature the Best of the '50s and '60s, Paint the Town and a 2013 judged art exhibition with an artist reception.

Tickets for the various events are available at the Anna Arts Center box office, which is scheduled to be open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

Crane pitches no-hitter for Shawnee

Nick Crane tossed a no-hitter Monday, April 15, to lead Shawnee to a 9-0 win over visiting Dongola in South Egyptian Conference high school baseball action.

Ryan Ochoa was 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Redskins at the plate. Austin Treece was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and Crane was 2-for-3.

Tyler Eddleman pitched for the Demons, scattering 11 hits.

Shawnee 7, Carterville 0: Gavyn Ellet was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs to lead the visiting Redskins to the non-conference win Saturday, April 13.

Union County resident joins cast of show staged in Branson, Mo.

A Union County resident has been selected to join the cast of a show which is presented in Branson, Mo.

The Anna Arts Center reports that Brian Caraker is the newest cast member of Branson's number one matinee show: "Number One Hits of the Sixties."

Caraker has been serving as director of performing arts at the Anna center.

He was scheduled to depart for Branson on Wednesday, March 27.

The show is scheduled to run through December.

Anna-Jonesboro was limited to three hits in a 5-1 loss to host Du Quoin in Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Mississippi Division high school girls’ softball action Monday, April 1.

Brooke Chamness was 1-for-3 with a stolen base to lead the Lady Wildcats. Chandra Parr and Haley Inman were each 1-for-3.

Mikayla Dammerman and Amanda Conaway pitched in the loss, combining to scatter 10 hits.

A-J is scheduled to play Thursday, today, at home against Sparta.

A-J 8, Harrisburg 1

Timbre Craig scored three goals to lead the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School girls’ soccer team to an 8-1 win over visiting Harrisburg Tuesday, April 16.

Courtney Kendrick and Susanna Cohen each scored two goals for the Lady Wildcats. Kati McIntyre also added a goal.

Kendrick, McIntyre and Kimberly Mixen each had two assists and Craig added one assist.

Katie Grant played 80 minutes in goal and had 2 saves.

The Lady Wildcats were defeated 4-0 on Monday, April 22, by host Carbondale.

A-J boys’ track team competes at Benton

Brandon Crosser finished first in the pole vault with a successful attempt of 11 feet to lead the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys track team’s efforts at the Spring Fling in Benton Saturday, March 30.

Crosser and Jacob Barger each had second place finishes for the Wildcats.

Crosser ran the 110-meter hurdles in 16.8 seconds. Barger had a 40-1 1/2 ft. effort in the triple jump.

A-J’s 4x200 meter relay team of Garrett Nimmo, Dakota Earnhart, Teddy Albert and Jacob Schaefer finished third with a time of 1:39.

First Christian Church, Anna, dedicates new building

First Christian Church of Anna, a part of the Anna-Jonesboro community for more than 120 years, dedicated its new church building at 200 Mallard Ln. Sunday. Mallard Lane is in east Anna.

The dedication speaker was Dr. Keith Ray, the president of Lincoln Christian University, who described the building as "a haven for sinners seeking the grace that only Jesus Christ can provide."

The new facility replaces the property the church has occupied at 204 N. Main St. since 1903.

Program set on Cherokee relocation

Monday, April 15, at 7 p.m., the community is invited to gather around a campfire at Trail of Tears State Forest near Jonesboro for a journey back in time with Caleb Tucker, as portrayed by reenactor Tony Gerard.

The program is being presented by the Shawnee Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society.

Tucker, a soldier in the U.S. Army, finds himself assigned to round up the Cherokee in preparation for forced removal to the Indian nations in present-day Oklahoma.
