James “Ronnie” Guthrie

James “Ronnie” Guthrie, 70, of Anna, died at 2:18 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Union County Hospital in Anna.

He was born on June 5, 1942, in Cobden, the son of Bill and Ruth Darnell Guthrie. They preceded him in death.

He married Judith Ann Toler on May 28, 1976.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam War veteran. He was a graduate of Cobden High School and was formerly employed by the Illinois Central Railroad and Chester Mental Health.

Nashville scores win over A-J

Anna-Jonesboro was limited to just two hits in a 12-2 loss to host Nashville in Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division Conference high school softball action Monday, April 8.

Mikayla Dammerman was 1-for-2 with a solo home run to lead the Lady Wildcats at the plate. Amanda Conaway was 1-for-2.

Dammerman was the losing pitcher, scattering 7 hits to go with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.

A-J, 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference, is scheduled to play Friday at home against Du Quoin.

Musical 'Grease' presented at A-JCHS

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School presented the musical "Grease" last weekend.

Performances were staged Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the auditorium at the high school.

The accompanying pictures were taken during a performance presented for students at A-JCHS on Thursday afternoon, April 11.

Ruby Keller Youngblood

Ruby Keller Youngblood, 94, of Dongola, and formerly of Madison, Tenn., died Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 4:06 p.m. at Jonesboro Rehab and Care Center.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1918, in Dongola, the daughter of Herman Cecil and Mina Melinda Lingle Keller. They preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her second mother, Inez Kesler Keller.

She married Luther Herbert Youngblood on June 16, 1936. He preceded her in death on June 8, 2000.

Relay For Life planning underway

Planning continues for the 2013 American Cancer Society Union County Relay For Life.

This year's Relay For Life is planned June 7-8 at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

Organizers are inviting Alexander, Pulaski and Johnson counties to be a part of the 2013 Union County event.

Relay For Life is an overnight event. Participants join together to celebrate life and to raise funds in an effort to combat cancer.

The theme for this year's relay is "Curing Cancer: Music to Our Ears."

Sandra Faye Lyerla

<strong>Mrs. Sandra Faye Lyerla, age 55, of Cobden, died at 3:25 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013 at her home in Cobden. She was born March 21, 1957 in Peoria, the daughter of William and Patsie Barringer Griffith. She married Wes Lyerla Jr. on May 10, 1997 at the First Baptist Church in Cobden.</strong>

Dr. John Wells Scholarship applications available

Applications are available in the guidance office at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School for the Dr. John O. Wells Memorial Scholarship.  

The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from A-JCHS who plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university in the following fall.  

The $1,000 award will be based upon the eligibility and demonstrated achievement of the student candidate as determined by the Wells family.

The scholarship will be sent directly to the recipient’s school of choice.  

Glenda Miller

<strong>Ms. Glenda Sue Miller, age 66 of Jonesboro died at 9:47 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at her home in Jonesboro. She was born June 4, 1946 in New Harmony, IN, the daughter of Joseph and Evelyn Smith Miller.</strong>

<strong>         Glenda is survived by her sister, Barbara Stuart of Springerton, IL; special care giver Randy Miller; and all her friends and staff at Chamness Care.</strong>

<strong>         Glenda was of the Baptist Faith.</strong>

West Frankfort man sentenced on theft charge

Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reports that Johnny E. Layne, 45, of West Frankfort, has been sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one count of theft, which is a Class 3 felony.

Edmonds said that Layne agreed to perform tree trimming work for an Anna homeowner in May 2011.

Layne was paid $1,130 up front but never returned to perform the work. He was charged following an investigation by the Anna Police Department.

Ronald G. Cantrell

<strong>Mr. Ronald G. Cantrell, age 56 of Bloomington, formerly of Anna went to be with the Lord at his home in Tuesday, February 12, 2013. He was born June 12, 1956, the son of James D. and Norma Jean (Collie) Cantrell of Anna. He married Kathy Wilson.</strong>
