Faye W. Cloyd

Faye W. Cloyd, 105, of Peoria passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2013, at Rosewood Care Center in Peoria.

She was born on June 19, 1907, in Ullin, IL the daughter of Cyrus F and Rosa McCommons Plott.  She married Franklin Cloyd on February 14, 1930, in Davenport, IA.  He passed away on July 21, 1982.  Also preceding her in death were one sister, Lela Williams, and two brothers, Lee and Ray, all of whom resided in Anna, IL.

Anna misses out on state grant funding for Main Street project

The City of Anna has received some disappointing news regarding its application for state grant money that would fund a street improvement project.

An update on the status of the grant was reported at last week’s regular meeting of the city council.

The meeting was Tuesday evening, March 5, at Anna City Hall.

City administrator Steve Guined reported that a Main Street improvement was not funded. The city had sought grant funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Main Street Improvement Program.

Union County Farm Bureau offers essay, photo contests

The Union County Farm Bureau is sponsoring two contests which are open to young people in the area.

The contests are being held in conjunction with the March observance of Illinois Agriculture Month.

An essay contest and a photo contest are underway.

Essay Contest

The topic for the essay contest is "Agriculture: A World of Opportunity."

The contest has three age groups: 9 to 11, 12 to 14 and 15 to 17.

Entries are to be no longer than one page, typed or hand-written, and can be any interpretation of the topic.

Safe Celebration again planned for A-J seniors

Graduation time is drawing closer for this year's seniors at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

This year's Safe Celebration after-graduation event is scheduled to take place May 18 at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Rec Center.

All A-JCHS graduates are invited and encouraged to attend this final celebration of their accomplishments.

Tickets will be $10 for seniors and $15 for their guests.

Members of the Safe Celebration committee have been asking for donations for this year's party.

Robert B. “Bud” Livesay

<strong>Robert B. “Bud” Livesay, age 89 of Jonesboro, died at 12:37 pm, Monday March 4, 2013 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Bud was born on April 6, 1923 in Grand Tower, the son of James and Clara (Bertram) Livesay.  He married Doris Hutton on February 12, 1950 in Anna and he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro.</strong>

Donna Marr

<strong>Donna Marr, age 84 of Jonesboro died at 10:10am Saturday March 23, 2013 in the Union County Hospital in Anna. Donna was born July 26, 1928 in Union County the daughter of George and Edith Rhoades Foster. Donna was married to Paul Marr in Anna.</strong>

<strong>She was employed for many years as a cook at Shawnee High School in wolf Lake.</strong>

Delta Theta Tau Sorority has busy spring planned

 recently had a monthly social at the home of Angie McClellan.

Katy Mowery and Billie Holshouser served as hostesses along with Angie for an event which had a Mardi Gras theme.

The members of Delta Theta Tau Sorority plan to be busy this spring.

The sorority hosted a  recent trivia fund-raising event. The event raised money for the VFW Men's Auxiliary's scholarships.

A couple of sorority members helped with clean up at the Union County animal shelter.

Easter egg hunts set in area Saturday

Easter egg hunts are scheduled in the area Saturday, March 30.

Anna, St. Mary's Church: An Easter egg hunt is planned Saturday, March 30, at St. Mary's Church in Anna.

The egg hunt will be at 10 a.m. in the church's parish hall at 402 Freeman St.

Shawnee Community College: The annual Shawnee Community College Phi Theta Kappa Easter egg hunt is planned Saturday, March 30.

The egg hunt is set for 10 a.m. on the college's main campus near Ullin.

West Frankfort man sentenced on theft charge

Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reports that Johnny E. Layne, 45, of West Frankfort, has been sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one count of theft, which is a Class 3 felony.

Edmonds said that Layne agreed to perform tree trimming work for an Anna homeowner in May 2011.

Layne was paid $1,130 up front but never returned to perform the work. He was charged following an investigation by the Anna Police Department.

Ronald G. Cantrell

<strong>Mr. Ronald G. Cantrell, age 56 of Bloomington, formerly of Anna went to be with the Lord at his home in Tuesday, February 12, 2013. He was born June 12, 1956, the son of James D. and Norma Jean (Collie) Cantrell of Anna. He married Kathy Wilson.</strong>
