Campaign begins to pick greatest Southern Illinois basketball team

Who do you think is the greatest high school basketball team ever?

That question has been asked a million times at coffee shops, taverns and gymnasiums throughout Southern Illinois.

Now, Nikki’s Place of Southern Illinois is giving residents the chance to answer the question.

From now until March 17, Southern Illinois residents (age 21 and older) can visit any of the 11 Nikki’s Place locations, including one in Anna, and cast their vote for the greatest boys high school basketball team to ever be assembled.

Theresa Diane McKinney

Mrs. Theresa Diane McKinney, age 49 of Anna, died at 1:45 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013 in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born April 22, 1964 in Granite City, the daughter of Paul and Rita Sietman Pearl. She married Scott McKinney on November 25, 1995 in Jonesboro.

Mary E. Penrod

Mary E. Penrod, 85, of Dongola, died at 4:05 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at Union County Long Term Care in Anna.

She was born on Feb. 4, 1928, in Anna, the daughter of John and Ruth Brimm Hill.

She married Dorris Penrod on April 16, 1948.

She liked to paint.

Gordon Stanley Dodd Gordon Stanley Dodd,

Gordon Stanley Dodd, 80, of Gun Barrel City, Texas, died on Dec. 11, 2013, in Tyler, Texas.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1933, in Jonesboro, the son of Paul and Helen Brown Dodd.

He married Joann Williams, on April 19, 1957, in Los Angeles, Calif. They made their home in Inola for 25 years, and then moved to the Whitehorn Cove area.

He worked most of his life as a phone equipment installer for AT&T.

He was a Navy veteran and was very active in the VFW.

Whitetails Unlimited set Feb. 15 in Union County

Whitetails Unlimited, WTU, is planning to sponsor a Union County banquet Saturday, Feb. 15.

The banquet will be at The Great Boars of Fire Lodge at 920 Kratzinger Hollow Rd. between Anna and Cobden.

A social hour begins at 5 p.m. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 each, $20 for a spouse or $20 for children 15 and under.

The deadline to order tickets is Feb. 10. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Tommy E. Swink

Mr. Tommy E. Swink, age 56 of Litchfield, KY, formerly of Dongola, died at 11:00 p.m. December 3, 2013 at his home. He was born May 2, 1957 in Anna, the son of Don C. and Betty J. Sims Swink.

Holiday programs planned at area schools

Holiday season programs are scheduled to begin this weekend at Union County public schools.

Here's a look at the schedule of events, by school:

Lick Creek School: A holiday program is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13.

The school also plans to host a Scholastic Book Fair that night.

Cobden Elementary School: A program presented by students in kindergarten through 5th grade is set for 12:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20. The program will be in the Cobden High School gymnasium.

A beginning band program is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19.

County's snow removal costs top $72,000

As might have been expected, the recent winter weather was a topic of conversation among those who attended last Friday morning's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Costs incurred by the Union County Highway Department for snow removal and work to attempt to clear local roads had topped $72,000 as of last Friday. The numbers were shared by county engineer Kevin Grammer.

"Financially – it was a pretty big hit," Grammer told the commissioners.

Thomas L. Pitts

         Mr. Thomas L. Pitts, age 84 of Anna, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday, December 13, 2013 in the Anna Rehab and Nursing Center. He was born June 17, 1929 in Anna, the son of Clarence and Edith Cooper Pitts.

         According to his wishes, Mr. Thomas L. Pitts will be cremated. Services will be held privately. Interment will be in the Casper Cemetery in Anna.

Cobden Police plan safety checks

The Cobden Police Department plans to conduct roadside safety checks during December and January.

Police will be looking for impaired drivers, uninsured motorists, failure to wear seatbelts, child restraint violations, drivers with suspended and revoked licenses, open alcohol and drugs.

The Cobden Police Department encourages motorists "to drive safe and drive smart."
