Key starters return for Cobden softball

The Cobden High School softball team will have to avoid injuries to enjoy a successful spring.

“We don’t have a lot of numbers out,” Cobden coach Nathan Emrick said. “We can’t afford to get anybody injured.”

The nucleus of the squad does return from last season’s 21-8 team.

Senior starters returning are catcher Emily Flamm, third baseman/pitcher Taylor Wilkins, third baseman/shortstop Emily Flamm, leftfielder Krysti Davis and centerfielder Becca Russell.

Zella Flossie Roberts

Zella Flossie Roberts, 96, of Springfield, and formerly of Lick Creek, died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Alburn Nursing and Rehab in Springfield.

She was born on Feb. 24, 1916, in Lick Creek, the daughter of James Edward and Hattie Emery Wiggs.

She married Leroy E. Roberts on May 20, 1939, in Cape Girardeau. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1992.

Anna teens complete first orientation flight with Civil Air Patrol

Through orientation flights with the Civil Air Patrol, CAP, at the Williamson County Regional Airport near Marion on Saturday, March 10, two local teens completed their first orientation flight in CAP’s sophisticated Cessna 182 aircraft.

John Haar and Elijah Haar, both from Anna, embarked on an adventure of a lifetime as they ventured into the wild blue yonder. 

Both just recently joined the Civil Air Patrol and are members of the local CAP unit, the Shawnee Composite Squadron.

Post, age 77 of Jonesboro, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2012 at her home in Jonesboro. She was born January 8, 1935 in Jonesboro, the daughter of John H. and Mabel Williams Spurlock. She married Joe Post on November 16, 2002 in Wolf Lake. He preceded her in death on December 2, 2009.</span></strong></p>

6 words a concern

To the editor,

 I would like an explanation of the following last "6 words" in a written statement the Illinois General Assembly proposes to submit to voters of State of Illinois at large for approval by referendum at the General Election to be held Nov 6th, 2012.

It states as follows: "To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for future generations of children, the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose"?

‘Pieces of PAST’ Quilt, Table Show celebrates 10th anniversary

The PAST organization will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its “Pieces of the PAST” Quilts and Tables Show on Saturday, April 14.  

The theme this year is “Through the Seasons: A Glimpse of the PAST.”

As a part of the luncheon program, a quilt turning will feature a “glimpse” of selected exhibits from each of the past 10 years’ events. Guests can expect to hear a decade of stories to accompany the quilts from that “season.”

PAST planning for annual spring luncheon, quilt show

The PAST group of Union County is gearing up for its annual spring luncheon and quilt show. 

“Through the Seasons: A Glimpse of the Past” is planned Saturday, April 14,  in the Family Life Center of Anna Heights Baptist Church at 100 Turner Ave. in Anna. 

A quilt exhibit will open at 9 a.m., followed by a luncheon at noon. 

Following the luncheon, a quilt turning and a program featuring Marlene Rivero of Mounds are planned.

Rivero will present a monologue portraying the seamstress of Mary Todd Lincoln. 

Report shows Illinois among most corrupt areas in nation

SPRINGFIELD  —  A new study lists Illinois as the third most corrupt area in the nation, and Chicago as the most corrupt city, and experts in the state say Illinois has earned those titles.

The report, released at a Wednesday, Feb. 15, statehouse news conference, details a study from the University of Illinois in Chicago, or UIC, and University of Illinois’ Institute of Government and Public Affairs in Champaign.

Only Louisiana and the District of Columbia have more corruption convictions per capita than Illinois.

One for the Cross planned in region on Palm Sunday

A One for the Cross event is planned on Palm Sunday, April 1, to benefit the Cross of Peace on Bald Knob Mountain near Alto Pass.

One for the Cross started three years ago when the then-current board of directors thought of a day of prayer for the Bald Knob Cross organization, as well as the physical structure and grounds all of which had seen better days.
