The Gazette-Democrat traces origin to 1849

When the Jonesboro Gazette first was published in 1849, the newspaper served one of the most important communities in Illinois during a time not far removed from when the region was a dense wilderness.

Through the 150 years that followed, the Jonesboro Gazette evolved into what is now The Gazette-Democrat. Today's newspaper represents past consolidations of the Jonesboro Gazette, the Anna Democrat, Anna Talk and Cobden Review.

A-J softball improves to 8-4 with victories

Katie Edwards led the host Anna-Jonesboro Community High School softball team to a 5-4 win over Nashville in Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division action Monday, April 9.

Edwards was 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and a run scored. Nashville was previously unbeaten this spring.

Katelynn Brush was 2-for-3 with a double, Chandra Parr was 2-for-3, Taylor Peterson was 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and 3 RBIs and Mikayla Dammerman was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

World War II prisoner of war

<strong>Mr. Richard Gene Robinson, age 88 of Anna, died at 11:25 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was born August 1, 1923 in Sparta, Illinois, the son of Brian and Reva Hardin Robinson. He married Ilene Pickett on December 24, 1955 in Corinth, Mississippi. She preceded him in death on January 15, 1991.</strong>

Davies Arnold Jr., age 90 of Cobden, died at 2:43 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2012 at the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born September 9, 1921 in South Dakota, the son of A. G. Davies Sr. and Lacey Connie Arnold. He married Betty Clare Sanders on December 25, 1955 in Corinth, Mississippi.</span></strong></p>

Fred J. Colboth

<strong>Mr. Fred J. Colboth, age 87 of Anna, died at 7:19 pm, Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Union County Hospital in Anna.  Fred was born April 16, 1925 in Centralia, the son of Arthur James and Audrey Wilkerson Colboth.  He married Vera L. Haire on December 20, 1945 in Anna.</strong>

Mobile home sustains major damage in fire

A mobile home in a rural area between Jonesboro and Wolf Lake sustained major damage in a fire which happened Monday night, April 23.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The Ware-Wolf Lake Fire Protection District and the Jonesboro Fire Department responded to the call.

The fire was reported at about 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Ware-Wolf Lake Fire Protection District chief Todd Harris said the blaze occurred in a vacant mobile home located along Beech Grove Road just north of the State Forest Road between Jonesboro and Wolf Lake.

Writer shares concerns about possible closing of Tamms prison

To the editor,

I just attended the COGFA hearing at Shawnee Community College regarding the closure of the Tamms Supermax Prison. 

My husband has been a Tamms Supermax employee for the last twelve years. 

For the most part, we keep his “work stuff” separate from our family’s home life.   

However, when the possibility of the closure came to light, I felt like I needed to get more involved. 

I had never attended a hearing like this before and didn’t know quite what to expect. 

Five charged with meth production

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Thursday, March 29, that methamphetamine charges have been filed against five Anna residents.

Those facing charges were identified as Brett A. Crunk, 41, of 119 George St.

Charles J. Brimm, 24, of 201 George St.

Travis Farris, 24, of 161 Hillside Terrace.

Gary L. Taborn, 29, of 203 W. George St.

Tina M. Barlow, 25, of 203 W. George St.
