Velma A. Pirtle
Velma A. Pirtle, 97, of Anna, formerly of Alto Pass, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2009, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, MO. She was born March 12, 1912, in Harrisburg, the daughter of Julius and Cecil Williams Pleasant.
She was married to John Pirtle on March 11, 1936, in Kenneth Mo. He preceded her in death on June 27, 1955. She later married Clifford Cavaness on Aug. 21, 1968, in Murphysboro, IL. He preceded her in death in May of 1980.
Velma is survived by two children, Beverly JoAnn and husband Abe Norton of Anna, Jerry and wife Margie Pirtle of Ozark, IL., two brothers, Carl and wife Linda Pleasant of Katy, TX., Earl Pleasant of Yakima, WA., five grandchildren, Cindy and husband Gene Hammer of Jonesboro, Steve and wife Kim Norton of McKinney, TX., Chris and wife Christy Norton of Cookeville, TN., Amanda and John Wesley Pirtle both of Ozark, IL., five great-grandchildren, Sara and husband John Schmitz of St. Charles, MO., Austin and Alexa Norton both of Cookeville, TN., Jared and Ethan Norton both of McKinney, TX., other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands John Pirtle and Clifford Cavaness, a brother, Henry Pleasant, and four sisters, Alberta, Beulah, Virginia and Deloris.
Velma was very knowledgeable about the Bible. She was very active in the studying and teaching of the Bible at many churches which she attended, especially at the Jerusalem Church near Pomona and the Congregational Church in Alto Pass where she was the second oldest member. Velma especially loved music and her participation at church was very evident. Velma wrote the “Alto Pass News” for the Gazette-Democrat for many years.
Funeral services for Mrs. Velma A. Pirtle will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna with the Rev. Randy Carstens officiating. Interment will be in the Alto Pass Cemetery. Friends may call at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna after 9:30AM Thursday until the funeral hour. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sunshine Inn or to TIP Hospice of Southern IL. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
