Shawnee School District 84 receives $1.4 million in funding

Shawnee Community School District No. 84 has recently received $1.4 million after a legal battle with owners of the Grand Tower Energy Center LLC, Rockland Capital.

Rockland Capital hadn’t paid its tax bill in 2015, leaving Shawnee short of the $1.4 million.

Rockland Capital filed an appeal to the Jackson County Board of Review to have the value of the property reduced in January.

The company lost the appeal, but is now appealing its 2016 taxes.

During a Jackson County tax sale on Jan. 19, most of the plant’s back taxes were bought by SI Resources LLC, which allowed Jackson County to pay the school district the $1.4 million.

The following statement is an excerpt of a statement from the Shawnee School District’s legal representative regarding the consequences of SI Resources buying the back taxes of the Grand Tower Energy Center:

“For 2014, there is a two year redemption period during which time the taxpayer can repay SI for the taxes plus the interest rate of 6 percent per six months plus penalties and fees. If the taxpayer does not pay within the redemption period, then SI can go into court and ask the court to foreclose on the property by way of a 2014 tax deed.

“If the taxpayer does not pay its 2015 taxes, the process will repeat for 2015.

Shawnee superintendent Shelly Clover-Hill said: “We are grateful to SI Resources for stepping in and purchasing the taxes on the power plant. Their generosity has allowed us to continue having school and educating our students like normal. This would be a much different scenario for Shawnee CUSD No. 84 if SI Resources had not intervened.”
