Relay for Life kickoff set

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Union County plans to have its annual kickoff event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, at the Anna Arts Center at 125 W. Davie St. in Anna.

Friends, neighbors, cancer survivors, caregivers and anyone interested in learning more about Relay For Life are invited to attend this open house.

The kickoff open house event offers information about the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives faster by helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures and fighting back.

Refreshments will be served, entry prizes will be given out and those who attend can learn more about the exciting activities planned for this year’s Relay For Life.

"We are providing a setting where you can stop in at your leisure to talk one-on-one with a Relay member about how you can make a difference in this fight against cancer," said Tavia Vasicek, income development representative with the American Cancer Society office in Marion.

"We can help tailor your participation in the 2012 Relay experience, whether you want to join the planning committee, start a team, offer sponsorship or offer to spread the word about our free services."

Teams which register by the end of January will be entered into a prize drawing for two donated Southwest Airlines tickets.

Relay For Life is an overnight event in which teams of local businesses, schools, churches, community groups and families build awareness and raise funds, prior to and at the event, to fight cancer.

"While the main objective of Relay For Life is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event helps spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer and unite a community in the fight against cancer," Vasicek said.

This year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Union County is scheduled at the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School track and field in Anna from 6 p.m. Friday, June 8, through 6 a.m. Saturday, June 9.

Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, secure community support, coordinate logistics, obtain refreshments and prizes, assist with publicity and plan entertainment activities for the event.
