Recalling our local heritage

Local history came to life at two separate events held last Saturday afternoon in Union County.

The Union County Historical and Genealogy Society hosted a program about the story of a World War II hero. The program was at Veterans of Foreign Wars Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 near Anna.

The PAST organization of Union County presented a program about Abraham Lincoln and Southern Illinois at Stinson Memorial Library in Anna.

Each of the presentations focused on stories which are part of our community's rich history.

As we have noted in the past, we tend to overlook those landmark events which have unfolded right here in our own backyard.

Sharing stories of local significance is important to our community, and for the people who live here. We commend the two organizations which took the time to share two very important stories.

A tradition continues

Thanksgiving is almost here, and with the holiday comes the renewal of a special tradition at a Union County school.

Next week, Lick Creek School plans to host its annual Grandparents' Day programs. For a number of years, the programs have been held at the school.

Grandparents will be treated to a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, and to entertainment provided by the students.

Lick Creek School's Grandparents' Day program is a special event, one which brings families and the community together. We thank the school for continuing this special event.
