Pulling a rabbit out of my hat...
With apologies to Bullwinkle Jay Moose, we’re going to begin this week with...
Hey, Rocky, watch me pull a column out of my hat...
Some of you of a certain age may remember famous cartoon celebrities Bullwinkle Jay Moose and his partner, Rocket “Rocky” J. Squirrel. Rocky and Bullwinkle came to mind Monday evening while yours truly was in the midst of trying to conjure up some sort of column for this week.
As I probably have noted in the past, sometimes a visit to the Well of Words simply comes up dry. Oh, you can look into the well where there used to be all sorts of words swimming around. And that can be as far as it goes.
That’s why I was so happy to think about Bullwinkle and Rocky while working on this little gem. Of course, Bullwinkle’s attempt to pull a rabbit out of his top hat was not successful. From what I was able to dig up during approximately 48 seconds of research Monday night on the internet, poor old Bullwinkle never did pull a rabbit out of his hat. Ever.
Lucky for me, his inspiration worked in my favor. Thinking about Bullwinkle led me to ponder some words The Other Half and yours truly heard about cats one day last week. Thinking about cats led me to thinking about pets. Thinking about pets led me to thinking about a special dog which appears in a quirky movie about Christmas...or maybe Halloween...
Hang in there. We’re going to connect all the dots. Well, I think we are...
The Other Half and yours truly attended one of those events connected with passages on the Journey Through Life last week. A message was shared at the event about a gentleman who had three cats. One day, a fourth cat showed up, looking for a home, as cats sometimes do. Some uncertainty surrounded whether or not one more cat needed to join the first three. The gentleman suggested something that amounted to...one more cat is OK...
At that point, The Other Half, who has a big heart when it comes to kitties, looked at me... We also have three kitties... I shook my head... knowing full well that if kitty number four ever shows up looking for a home...well, I might as well get the litter box ready...
The special dog is actually spending some time in our little corner of the world during October. His name is Zero. Zero appears in the movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Daughter and I like the Tim Burton flick. The Other Half, well, not so much.
Zero is not your run of the mill dog. He’s a ghost dog. And, thanks to a couple of special creations at this year’s Pumpkin Town at the Anna City Park, you can get a look at Zero. And Jack Skellington, too. Zero is Jack’s ghost-dog.
Zero isn’t the only special dog you can see at Pumpkin Town. Snoopy is on hand, too. If you haven’t been to see Pumpkin Town yet, make plans to do so. Say hello to Zero...and Snoopy...
Oh, for whatever it might be worth, I thought about asking Bob to write this week’s column. He was too busy sleeping on an old quilt...maybe next time...or I just might give Bullwinkle a call...
