William Lee “Bill” Gurley

William Lee “Bill” Gurley, 69, of Jonesboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, at home, surrounded by his loved ones. 

He was born on April 10, 1954, in Anna, the son of Carlos and Willma Musgrave Gurley. 

He married Peggy Goins on June 15, 1984. They shared 39 wonderful years together.

Mr. Gurley worked for many years as a supervisor for the City of Jonesboro, where he made many friends. 

He then worked as the water operator for Southwater, where he helped to build the new water treatment system, from start to finish. He took great pride in his work.

He had many hobbies, including watching Westerns, spending time outdoors, trapping, digging ginseng, fishing, squirrel hunting and his favorite, turkey hunting. Some called him the “Turkey Slayer.” 

He also enjoyed yard sales, where he would hunt for old Zebco rods and reels to collect and refurbish. He loved music and had an amazing voice; he was a song leader at church for many years.

Mr. Gurley enjoyed fellowship with his church family at the United Pentecostal Church of Dongola. 

He loved traveling with his wife, Peggy. They took many trips to the beaches in Florida, but his favorite trip was traveling out West. 

Mr. Gurley is survived by his wife, Peggy Gurley; daughter Rachel Gurley (Kevin Washer); son Michael (Ivy) Yana; grandchildren Lily, Holly and Allie Yana, Drake and Cheyenne Roach; brothers Carlos (Sharon) Gurley and Mike (Melissa) Gurley; sisters Paula (Rick) Wright and LouAnn (John) Roquemore; many nieces, nephews, great friends and family. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather Paul Davis; stepmother Ann Gurley; father-in-law Ted Goins; sister-in-law Susie Goins; sister Lori Duncan; brother Bernard Davis; and brother-in-law,Jeff Goins. 

He really loved spending time with his family and many special friends. 

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with the Rev. John Gourley officiating. Interment followed in the Anna Cemetery. 

Memorials can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
