Steve L. Sims

Steve L. Sims, 75, of Tamms (Elco), died Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, at his home.

He was born on July 27, 1949, in Cairo, the son of John “Bud” and Josephine Johnson Sims. Both preceded him in death.

On Jan. 12, 1973, he married Doris Miller Sims. They shared 51 years together.

He loved to fish and hunt, with squirrel being his favorite game. He enjoyed the company of his many friends and coworkers.

He retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 2012 with 31 years of service. He worked himself up from a trackman to a track inspector, with many titles in between. Some of his coworkers nicknamed him “Taco.” He had drive and ambition his entire life.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Tamms; one son, Steven B. Sims, granddaughter Stevie Ray Sims and first wife, Cathy Lamburth, all of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and one brother, Charlie Sims of Avista, Ark. 

He also is survived by an aunt who is 91 years young, Erma Sims Shelton of Anna; and several nephews.

He gave his life over to Jesus Christ on Aug. 8, 2024. He spent his days reading the Bible, praying and watching football.

Funeral services were at noon Saturday, Oct. 5, at Jones Funeral Home in Tamms. Pastor Danny Beggs officiated. Burial followed at Sims Cemetery on Illinois Route 127 North of Elco.
