PVT Robert L. Skaar

PVT Robert L. Skaar

Come On Home, Boy!

Our family has had a recent experience of which every American should be proud. One of our Nation’s Sons has been brought back to America for burial.

PVT  Robert L. Skaar, 19, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, passed away March 10, 1945, in Wildenguth, France.

Robert served in the U.S. Army, C Company, 1st BN, 222nd Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division and gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country during World War II.

Robert L. Skaar left his home, family and everything familiar to an 18 year old. He was inducted into the Armed Services of the United States of America.

After saying goodbye to his parents and siblings, never to see them again, PFC Skaar was sent to France, one of America’s Allied Countries, in a mission to hold back an invasion of Germany into France.

Not long after starting the mission, PFC Skaar was Killed In Action, 1945, along with others. Due to the danger of land mines, it would be several years before the remains could be retrieved.

France, in working with the United States, provided sanctuary holding for many remains.

In 2021, our family was contacted by a contract genealogist with the United States Army, to inquire if any family members would be willing to provide DNA, due to the suspect that the Military Forensics Team might have made a familiar connection to the remains that were in their possession.

Family members gladly complied in providing DNA samples. After that, we waited patiently. Not until three years had passed, were we contacted with the news that a positive identification had been verified, in that these were the remains of a maternal uncle of Cheri Honey, Sandra Dillow, John Cauble, Scott Cauble and Gigi Hurt. Identified - June 2024.

As events unfolded and requests were heard and discussed, funeral plans were made.

As a family, we were transported via Military Van by our Liaison, Wes Chrisman, to Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, to receive Our Soldier on September 27, 2024.

He then was taken by hearse 2 1/2 hours away to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, his hometown.

We followed the procession in convoy. He was taken to Dickinson Funeral Home to be held for burial on October 1, 2024. We stayed for the duration.

On October 1, 2024, he was buried in a plot that was less than 100 feet from the graves of his parents, at Woodlawn Cemetery. Some siblings are also buried here. This is Amazing and surely has The Lord’s Hand in it to make this Right, 79 years later.

If you like, please pray for his family as we are just beginning to process this great honor and privilege in bringing our mother’s baby brother, PFC Robert L. “Bobby Lee” Skaar, home.

Keep praying until they can all be home. There are so many.

A graveside service with Military Honors was held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, in the Veterans Section of Woodlawn Cemetery, La Crosse, Wisconsin. Monsignor Richard Gilles officiated the service.
