Mona Jane Acuff
Mona Jane Acuff, age 74 years, a resident of rural Vienna, Ill., passed away Monday afternoon, June 2, 2025, at 12:37 p.m. at Deaconess Regional Healthcare in Marion, Ill.
Janey, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, was born Nov. 26, 1950 in Blytheville, Ark. She was the daughter of Robert and Lessie Mae (White) Rhodes.
On July 9, 1970, Janey was united in marriage to Ronnie Lee Acuff in Dongola, Ill.. He preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 2003.
Janey is survived by: her children – Candace McCommons (Keith), Joseph Scott Acuff (Kristie Treat), Rhonda Goines (Josh); grandchildren – Ashtyn Greer (Matt), Faith Acuff (Jack), Sam Acuff (Abby), and Grace Acuff (Draven); great grandchildren – Andy Greer and Maci Greer; her sisters – Geneva Smith, Janice Westmoreland, Peggy Rhodes (Dick), Ocie Oswald, and Linda Rhodes; sisters-in-law – Martha Rhodes and Candy Rhodes; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Janey was also anticipating the upcoming births of 2 great grandchildren.
Janey loved and cherished her beloved canine companion, Maggie.
In addition to her parents and husband, Janey was preceded in death by: siblings – Edgar Rhodes, Loretta Wilson, Kenneth Rhodes, Troy Rhodes, and Hobert Rhodes; as well as brothers-in-law – Mike Oswald, Joe Westmoreland, Woody Wilson, and Don Smith.
Janey was a 1969 graduate of Cobden High School. She earned an associate degree in medical coding from Shawnee Community College at Ullin, Ill.
Janey was employed in the finishing department at Florsheim Shoe Company in Anna for a number of years. She was later employed by Ensign-Bickford Industries as an assembly line worker where she assisted in the manufacture of non-electric detonators.
Janey had a zest for life and is remembered for her fun-loving, joyful and positive nature. She had an inner strength that helped her to meet life’s challenges and adversities with a firm and steadfast faith. Janey was loved by all who knew her. She had a desire to take care of others.
Janey was an amazing cook. She is especially remembered for her fried chicken, her meatloaf, and chili. Sunday dinners were the highlight of the family’s week. Janey cherished time spent with her grandchildren.
She also loved sitting on her porch, watching the birds at her feeders as well as enjoying her roses and peonies. Janey would also spend quiet and peaceful “time with Jesus” on her porch. She was of the Christian faith.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, June 8 at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Jay Franklin officiated. Burial will be in the American Legion Cemetery in Dongola.
