Jason R. McHughs, 33, of Elco, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, as the result of a house fire. He died while saving the life of his infant son. 

Jason was born on July 20, 1991, in Murphysboro, the son of Eric “Jae” McHughs and Sherri Miller. 

He  is survived by his fiancé, Brittany Dailey of Elco; children Rilynn McHughs of Waterloo, Wis., Leland McHughs of Madison, Wis., and Tyrstonn McHughs of Elco; mother and step-father Sherri and Robert Klein of Beaver Dam, Wis.; father Eric “Jae” McHughs of McClure; siblings Chelsea McHughs of Anna and Dominic and Cady Davison of Beaver Dam, Wis.; as well as numerous other step and adopted siblings. 

He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Debby McHughs of New Mexico; paternal great-grandmother Shirley Franklin of Waupun, Wis.; maternal grandparents Henry and Alice Houston of Grand Tower and James and Marty Sadler of Anna; Brittany’s parents, Randy (Tasha) Dailey and Julie (Mikie) Poole; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. 

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Charles McHughs; and paternal great-grandfather Gene Franklin.

Jason fiercely loved his family and friends as demonstrated by his heroic efforts during the fire. He was an artist, creating works of art with paint, wood and tattoos. He was currently learning to play guitar. He loved attending and participating in festivals, especially those with fire dancing and fire breathing. He served in the U.S. Army.

The family of Jason R. McHughs will receive guests from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna. 

Memorials can be made to Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home to assist the family with expenses. Envelopes will be available at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home.
