Henry J. Mulder Sr.

Henry J. Mulder Sr., 91, of Cobden, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.

He was born on Jan. 16, 1932, in Chicago, the son of Klaas and Elizabeth Huzinga Mulder. 

In 1953, he married Patricia Stuart and they spent many loving years together until her passing in 2015.

Mr. Mulder retired in 1992 after working 30-plus years for the Gust K. Newberg Construction Company in Chicago. 

His work with Newberg Construction Company, as site superintendent, allowed him to oversee construction of skyscraper buildings in Chicago, such as the Civic Center and First National Bank. 

He also worked on McCormick Place, White Sox Park and the deep tunnels under the Chicago River. He worked on constructing Interstate 80 from Chicago to Aurora, as well as several nuclear power plants along the Illinois River. Mr. Mulder also participated in building some of the locks and dams on the Ohio River. 

Along with his work, he made and poured concrete for friends and family. 

Henry is survived by his daughter, Sandra French; sons Henry J. Mulder Jr., Michael (Susan) Mulder and Patrick Mulder; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jan Bender; and two sisters, Teresa and Eleanor.

No services are planned at this time. Cremation rites will be accorded by Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro.
