Hallie Dean Smoot Jr.
Hallie Dean Smoot Jr., 77, formerly of Southern Illinois, passed peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at Cedargate Healthcare in Poplar Bluff, Mo., with his family at his side.
He was born on Aug. 26, 1947, in Anna, the son of Hallie Dean Smoot and Viola Fitzgerald Smoot.
Mr. Smoot is survived by his three children, Staci (Ivan) Alley of Springfield, Mo., Rebekah (Marty) Ellsworth of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Michael (Tami) Smoot of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; six grandchildren, Hannah, Sarah and John Keuneke, Isaiah and Eramin Ellsworth and Caleb Smoot; four great-grandchildren, Russell and Lucas Keuneke, Jaxon and Weston White-Keuneke; siblings Jan Elkins of South Elgin, Pat Spond of Mt. Carmel and Lonnie Smoot of Anna; many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Jerry Fitzgerald, Vernon Smoot, Shirley Darlene Smoot and Joyce Warden.
Mr. Smoot honorably served his country during Vietnam after being drafted following high school graduation.
He was a self-employed contractor in Hardy, Ark., for many years before retirement.
He enjoyed watching birds and wildlife, cooking, helping others and visiting with family and friends. Hallie will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Anna Cemetery, with Pastor Marty Ellsworth officiating. Interment followed.
Graveside military rites were conducted by Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of the VFW in Anna and the Illinois Army National Guard funeral honor team of Marion.
