Glenn L. Winstead

Glenn L. Winstead, 100, of Carbondale, and formerly of Cobden, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at Manor Court in Carbondale. 

He was born on April 6, 1923, in Cobden, the son of James L. “Roy” and Ruby Hazel Sinks Winstead. 

He married Geraldine Brown at the First Baptist Church of Anna on Feb. 4, 1945. She preceded him in death on Dec. 16, 2019. They celebrated 74 years together.

Mr. Winstead is survived by a sister-in-law, Betty (Marvin) Hutton; dear friends Patsy and Richard McCleland; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Winstead; his parents; and two sisters, Ruth Grear and Helen Morey.

Mr. Winstead was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cobden. He attended a country grade school before graduating from Cobden High School in 1940.  

He served in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he was an Army engineer, making maps from aerial photos.

For over 90 years, he lived on the same farm near Cobden. He then moved to Liberty Village in Carbondale before moving to The Landings assisted living three years later. 

Funeral services for Glenn Winstead were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Limestone Baptist Church north of Cobden. He was laid to rest next to his wife in Limestone Cemetery. 

Memorials can be made to Limestone Cemetery or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
