Deacon Patrick W. ‘Pat’ Patterson
Deacon Patrick W. “Pat” Patterson, 78, of Cobden, died Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Barnes Jewish Extended Care in Clayton, Mo.
He was born on March 9, 1946, in Chicago, the son of Harold George and Verla E. Wolfe Patterson.
He married Joan Ruberry on Sept. 9, 1967, in Evergreen Park.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Joan Patterson of Cobden; two sons, Patrick John “P.J” and wife Sheila Patterson of Savoy and Charles Christopher and wife Joyce Patterson of Fults; two daughters, Amy Lynne and husband Anthony Irali of Indian Trail, N.C., and Samantha Venturelli and partner Leon McDaniels of Elkville; grandchildren Gillian Sloane Patterson, Jocelyn Moiraine Patterson, Jessica Patterson, Kaytlin Patterson, Alexander Anthony Irali, Ashlynne Marie Irali, Kayla Bechtold, Patrick Venturelli, Joseph Venturelli, Braxton Baseden and Bradlle Smith; great-grandchild Lorynn Patterson; siblings Carol and husband Jim Miller, Jean and husband Don Chilson, Bill and wife Debbie Patterson and Jim Patterson; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was born and raised in Chicago. He graduated with a Business Degree from the University of Illinois Chicago before making Cobden his permanent home in 1973.
After years in corporate jobs, he found his true passion when he was ordained as a Deacon in the Diocese of Belleville on Dec. 21, 1985. He later earned a Master of Theology degree and served for 20 years as a Chaplain for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Marion before his retirement in 2008. He continued to serve as a Permanent Deacon for St. Joseph Parish in Cobden until his passing. He touched many people’s lives through his selfless service.
He was an avid reader of many subjects, loved to play many different instruments, including the guitar and mandolin. He particularly enjoyed woodworking in his retirement. He also enjoyed fixing computers for friends and family, playing with his dogs and his grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cobden, with Bishop Micheal McGovern as celebrant, along with Father Uriel Salamanca.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden. The Rosary will be said at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials can be made to the Diocese of Belleville Diaconate Program or to St. Francis Community Animal Rescue & Education (CARE). Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Cobden at a later date.
