Betty J. Stegle

Betty J. Stegle, 87, of Anna, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, surrounded by her family. 

She was born on July 15, 1936, in Cobden, the daughter of William and Bertie Burnett Murray. 

She married James Charles Stegle on Oct. 6, 1955, in Murphysboro. He preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 2007.

She is survived by her son, Michael (Judy) Stegle of Jonesboro; two daughters, Kathy Stegle of Cape Girardeau and Karen (Claude) Sadler of Anna; eight grandchildren, Jason (Abbie) Stegle, Codie (Justin) Carver, Jodie (James) Dillow, Cortnie Stewart, Josh (Ashley) Stegle, Katie (Jared) Rumfelt, Travis Sadler and Michael (Salina) Sadler; 19 great-grandchildren, Avery, Fletcher, Alan Mikel, Ethan, Taylor, Blake, Kylie, Caroline, Reid, Faith, Logan, Parker, Skyler, Karly, Kaia, Payton, Drake, Huntley and Griffin; five great-great-grandchildren, Brooks, Jace, Jude, Emme and Liam; one sister, Bertie Green of Birmingham, Ala.; five sisters-in-law, Patsy Murray, Linda Murray, Edwina Murray, Janice Murray and Nadine Murray; many other extended family and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Charles Stegle; an infant daughter, Debra Stegle; a son, James M. Stegle; eight brothers, Billy, Melvin, Charlie, Jimmy, Bobby, Donnie, Junior and Frankie Murray; and two sisters, Laverne Highland and Dorothy Burgess. 

Mrs. Stegle was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church for many years. She enjoyed attending church and fellowship with her church family. 

Early in her career she worked for JoAnn Laundry in Anna and later went to Union County Hospital in Anna in housekeeping. She retired after 30 years of service. 

She enjoyed playing bingo and her family get-togethers. Her kind, gentle nature will be dearly remembered. 

The Stegle family thanks Gail and all the staff at the Voyage of Anna, Maggie with Hospice of Southern Illinois and Terry and Billie Henderson for all their care and kindness.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna, with Pastor Bobby Richardson officiating. Interment was in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Cobden. 

Memorials can be made to the Voyage, Hospice of Southern Illinois or Mill Creek Baptist Church.
