Cobden defeats Century, Neoga
for sectional, super-sectional titles
Fireworks and sirens heralded sectional and super-sectional championships brought home by the Cobden High School baseball team.
With the victories, the Appleknockers advanced to the Illinois High School Association's Class 1A state finals.
The finals are set for Friday and Saturday at Dozer Park in Peoria.
Cobden defeated Century last Saturday to win a sectional championship.
Monday afternoon, the Appleknockers outscored Neoga for a super-sectional title and earned a trip to the state finals.
The team returned to Cobden late Saturday night following a rain-soaked sectional championship game against Century earlier in the day. Sirens and fireworks sounded in the Union County village as the championship team returned home. The same greeting awaited the Appleknockers following their super-sectional victory Monday.
The sectional and super-sectional championship games both were played at Itchy Jones Stadium on the campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Cobden's state tournament finals games will be broadcast and streamed online by WIBH radio in Anna.

The pregame broadcast for Cobden's game on Friday is slated to begin at 9:45 a.m. The game begins at 10 a.m. WIBH also will broadcast Cobden's game on Saturday.
