Anna teens complete first orientation flight with Civil Air Patrol

Through orientation flights with the Civil Air Patrol, CAP, at the Williamson County Regional Airport near Marion on Saturday, March 10, two local teens completed their first orientation flight in CAP’s sophisticated Cessna 182 aircraft.

John Haar and Elijah Haar, both from Anna, embarked on an adventure of a lifetime as they ventured into the wild blue yonder. 

Both just recently joined the Civil Air Patrol and are members of the local CAP unit, the Shawnee Composite Squadron.

The hour long flights in the single-engine Cessna aircraft introduced the cadets to the science that makes flight possible. 

They learned about navigation, weather, aircraft instruments, flight maneuvers and more.

Cadets progress through the Cadet Orientation Flight Syllabus, which is designed as an outline of the training that they will receive. 

They will begin with the first flight which is an introduction to the airplane and the basic maneuvers and instruments. 

They will continue through the syllabus advancing their knowledge and skills by performing more advanced maneuvers such as stalls, steep turns, and cross country navigation. 

Civil Air Patrol, the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit, volunteer organization.

Through CAP’s three incorporated missions, emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs, members participate in activities such as performing more than 90 percent of inland search and rescue missions, taking a leading role in the education of CAP members as well as the public in aerospace, and participating in one of the best youth leadership development programs in the country.

Membership in the Civil Air Patrol is open to everyone ages 12 and up.
