Viola I. Prineas, 86, of Wolf Lake, died at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015 in the Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. She was born Oct. 1, 1928 in East St. Louis, Illinois, the daughter of Matthew "Eugene" and Villa Zimmerman Hobbs. She married Peter Prineas on Nov. 11, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri. He preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1999.
She is survived by her daughters, Lynne Chamness of Freeman Spur, and Mary (Cliff) McMahan of Wolf Lake; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Greg) Clutts, Nathan Chamness, Katelyn (Jake) Sullivan and Logan McMahan; two great-grandchildren, Claudia Chamness and Cooper Sullivan; one sister, Violet Hicks of Panama City, Florida; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Peter Prineas; and two sons, Gregory Prineas and Peter Prineas Jr.
She was a devoted Christian. She was a member of the Women Aglow, the Pink Ladies; and served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1988.
Services were held privately Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015 in the Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale with Dennis Vancil officiating. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale. Memorial contributions may be made to Union County Counseling or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Envelopes will be available in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
