Anna School District 37 students participatein Mini-Relay For Life

During the recently ended 2008-2009 academic year, Anna School District 37 students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades participated in classroom lessons and activities specifically designed to promote cancer awareness and prevention.

The students also were responsible for solicitation of donors to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Some students personally went door-to-door to request donations.

Anna students were able to raise $5,690.68 for the American Cancer Society. Fund-raising efforts by grades follow:

3rd grade: Cheryl Ligon's class raised $1,001.16, Nancy Welborn's class $607.14, and Mary Ann Westbrooks' class $778.

4th grade: Debbie Fears' class raised $500, Tonya Hammer's class $455, and Heather Reynolds' class $854; Scroll money totalled $50.92.

5th grade: Lisa James' class raised $483, JoVonna Noble's class $240 and Jenny R. Sadler's class $682.25.

During Spirit Week, $39.21 was raised.

Mini-Relay For Life

Students recently held a Mini-Relay For Life at the Anna City Park to celebrate their fundraising efforts. At the event on May 22, students all took the first lap together with their teachers.

The day's activities included music, lunch and lots of time to have fun.

The top fund-raisers in each grade level received prizes donated by several local vendors and the American Cancer Society.

Anna District 37 faculty, staff and students voiced appreciation to those in the community who contributed to the successful fund-raising effort. They especially are grateful to Shawnee Community College, the Shawnee Community College book store, Save-A-Lot, Mystify Music, McDonald's, First Baptist Church in Anna, Movie Depot, Troy and Ellen Schlenker and the Anna Junior High School Student Council.
